Brewer becomes city's first NBA lottery pick

Since the rise of Arkansas' basketball program in the late 1970 s under then
head coach Eddie Sutton, it has not been uncommon for Razorbacks to be
selected in the NBA Draft, even early.
However, a native of Fayetteville had never been selected in the first round
of the NBA Draft.
All the other drafted Hogs were either from another city in the state or
nation.
But the Utah Jazz changed that on June 28 when the organization selected
Ronnie Brewer as the 14 th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.
Brewer, an All-SEC and honorable-mention All-America, learned the game from
his father Ron Brewer Sr., himself the 7 th pick of the 1978 Draft, on the
courts and in the gyms of Fayetteville.
Brewer was also a product of Kyle Adams' successful Woodland Junior High
program, and he starred for three years for Barry Gebhart's Fayetteville
Bulldogs in high school.
Following in his father's footsteps at Arkansas was not a done deal during
Brewer's recruitment. In the end, Arkansas won a close recruiting battle
with Oklahoma for Brewer’s services.
But from the time he stepped on the court, the multi-talented Brewer was the
Razorbacks' best player.
Though the squad missed out on the NCAA Tournament his first two seasons,
Brewer along with senior teammates Jonathon Modica and Eric Ferguson willed
the Hogs into the Big Dance with a late-season six-game winning streak. It
was the Hogs first trip to the NCAA Tourney in four years.
Though it took him a number of weeks to make a final decision, Brewer opted
to forego his senior season with Arkansas to become a pro.
When he entered his name into the draft pool, Brewer was considered to be of
late, first-round caliber.
But thanks to his individual workouts, the versatile 6-7 guard / forward
elevated his standing to lottery status.
Brewer is averaging 4.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in 13.2 minutes
of playing time. He has started 10 games for the Jazz this season and is
shooting 51 percent from the field.
