Would You Have Traded D-Will for Andre Miller? By Travis Heath for HOOPSWORLD.com Jan 4, 2007, 15:03 Imagine for a minute if you were the General Manager of the Utah Jazz. Now, imagine that we could rewind the clock to this past summer. Finally, imagine if the Denver Nuggets came to you with a trade proposal that centered around Andre Miller and a #1 pick for Deron Williams and Gordan Giricek. Would you have pulled the trigger? No, this isn't just a fantasy scenario concocted by your friendly neighborhood columnist. An NBA executive confirmed to Basketball News Services that the Nuggets floated this idea by Utah's brass. The same source also said the Jazz gave it next to no consideration. Of course everything ended up okay for the Nuggets as they were able to acquire Allen Iverson with Miller and a draft pick as the centerpiece of the package, but let's move back to the original question: Would you have pulled the trigger on a deal for Miller this past summer? The key component of the aforementioned question is this past summer. The reality is that there was every reason in the world to do the deal. First, keep in mind that Williams averaged only 10.8 points and 4.5 assists during his rookie season. Sure he showed some potential, but banking on potential in trades has gotten more than a few teams in trouble over the years. Contrast Williams' numbers to Miller's career marks of 14.0 points and 7.6 assists per game combined with his NBA experience and Utah would almost have to consider the deal, right? Not only that, but Miller played his college ball at the University of Utah and many of the fans in the area still have an affinity for the point guard. Moreover, Utah would have been able to get out from underneath Giricek's contract while also getting a 2007 first round pick. Sure seems like an intriguing deal on a lot of fronts. Still, Utah gave it no consideration. They saw how well Williams played in summer league and how hard he was working to get better with special emphasis placed on improving his quickness. They banked on him becoming a big-time NBA point guard, perhaps as early as this season. In hindsight, it's easy to say: "There's no way I would have done that deal." However, you have to put things in the context of the time. Miller was an established point guard, and he's the type of personality that fits head coach Jerry Sloan to perfection. He's great in the halfcourt, and he's old school in his approach to the game. All that said, the Jazz still put all of their point guard eggs in the D-Will basket -- and it appears to have been the right move, and a gutsy one at that. Knowing everything we know now, most people would say no to Miller. It was the Jazz, though, who made this decision without knowing for sure whether it would pay-off. Being successful in the game of player personnel requires the ability to take calculated risks and stay ahead of the curve, something the Jazz seem to have accomplished successfully in this instance. Having acknowledged that, isn't there a small part of at least some of you Jazz fans out there that wonders what this Jazz team would be like with Miller running the show? Sure, the right play -- especially for the future of the franchise -- was to keep Williams, but would Miller have been a better fit for a Jazz team trying to make a run at a title this season? So the same question surfaces again: What you have pulled the trigger? We know what decision the Jazz made, but would you have done the same? http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_20209.shtml -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 59.41.172.202
