One-on-One with Carlos Boozer By Travis Heath for HOOPSWORLD.com Jan 15, 2007, 14:32 Carlos Boozer is having what is commonly referred to as a career year. Perhaps the most surprising part of Boozer's performance so far this season is the fact he's doing it after two injury plagued campaigns. He's played so well some have even mentioned him as a dark-horse MVP candidate. His teammates and coaches have no doubt taken notice. "He seems to be an intelligent player, likes to win, and wants to work hard to win," said head coach Jerry Sloan. "He and Memo seem to compliment each other fairly well, and hopefully they can do that more and more as they play together so they understand situation basketball much better." "I think first of all, he's a great individual, he wants to win, he knows how to win, and he's in great shape himself," added assistant coach Tyrone Corbin. "He's a really, really talented guy and just wants to do whatever it takes for the team to be successful." Perhaps the player who has been the biggest beneficiary of Boozer's play is point guard Deron Williams. "He gets me a lot of assists," explained a smiling Williams. "I can throw it to the big fella and I know he's going to go to work." This begs the question of whether or not Boozer should be an All Star this season. There is virtually no chance Boozer will be voted in by the fans which means the Western Conference coaches are his only hope. "I guess you've got to let the fans vote but . . . I don't know," Williams said with a disillusioned look on his face. "Boozer's played like an All Star, like an MVP in my opinion. He's having a great year and has done a lot for us. He's a guy who we can just throw the ball into and he's going to get us baskets. He's going to be there to rebound for us and he's a leader on the court." Utah's "leader" recently took some time to chat exclusively with BNS' Travis Heath. What follows is a small portion of that conversation. It seems like even through all of the doubters and injuries, you've always believed you are one of the best power forwards in the game. With all of the injuries and everything, how did you maintain that confidence in your game? Well, I think every player should be confident in what they can do and their abilities, and I'm certainly the same way. I'm confident in what I can do, but I'm more confident in my team. Even though we are having a great season, I think we still don't get as much respect as we should and teams still take us lightly. We're still trying to prove ourselves. I think we'll answer those questions when we get to the postseason. With so many good power forwards in the Western Conference, where do you believe you rank? I don't know where I rank, I'll leave that up to you guys. I just go out there and try and do what I can for my team to win. I'm a banger, I like to post-up, I like the physical play, and I like to mix it up inside. Are you an All Star this season? I hope so. We'll see. Well, I mean the fans aren't going to vote you in at this point, but do you think the coaches will recognize your performance this season? I hope so. It's up to them to make the decision. It would be an honor to make it. I think we have a few guys on this team who can make the All Star team especially the way our team has been playing. Two or three years down the road, where do you see Carlos Boozer? I think we have a team that in two or three years can be vying for championships every year. We are very versatile, have a very good front-line, a very good backcourt, and we are developing a really good bench. If we continue to develop, we should be one of the best teams in the league two or three years from now as well and hopefully win a championship. We've got a couple of guys - Memo and D-Fish - that have rings and we all want to join them. Thanks, Carlos. You got it.
