One-on-One with Dee Brown

The United Center crowd booed everyone in the Utah Jazz starting lineup
except for Deron Williams, who received a louder ovation than almost anybody
on the entire Bulls team. But it was Dee Brown the crowd longed to see, and
chants of
"We Want Dee" echoed through a stadium painted more orange than
red on a night when two of Champaign-Urbana's favorite guys came back to the
home state.
Unlike Williams, however, Brown is an Illinois boy born and raised, attending
Chicagoland's Proviso East High School (the same school Doc Rivers and
Michael Finley attended), so the love around these parts is even stronger
for him. Dee returned that love via exclusive interview with Basketball News
Services after Saturday night's win against the Bulls.
The crowd was chanting for you tonight, man. They wanted to see you. Do you
have any hard feelings about not getting into the game tonight?
Nah, man. We won! It's not like it matters to me. We won the game, I'm happy,
and we'll just continue to win. That's all it's about really in this business.
Did you and Deron Williams ever joke around about playing for the same NBA
team.
No, I had no idea I'd be playing in Utah, so…
Well what has having one of your old college teammates around done to help
you out your rookie season?
Everybody's asking me that question─I mean, we used to have battles back in
college when we played the same amount of minutes a night. Now he doesn't
have time to come out to the gym and work out extra with me. But just to see
him grow and have an All-Star season has really motivated me and helped me
get focused me to try and get better every day.
But it's nice though, right?
It's always nice to have people you know, but like I said once I get on a
team everybody becomes my brother.
You've been lucky enough to be playing not only with Deron, but with Roger
(Powell, Jr.─another U of I alum from '05 Final Four team) as well. What
were you feeling when he got cut?
It hurt me, man. That's a great guy─positive energy, he doesn't bring
cancer to your team. He only brings positives to your team, and he works
hard, so it was sad for me to see a guy like that leave.
When you headed into the draft process last summer there were a lot of guys
saying you were borderline NBA material because of your size…
The whole league is small, man. Size don't matter! That's just an excuse.
Everybody's got an excuse why not to do stuff, you know? If that was the
reason, then that was the reason, but I'm here, so that's all I care about.
You've played a lot of games in the United Center with the Illini─what's
your favorite memory playing in this building?
(grinning playfully) Just winning every time. Not losing.
Now that you're out of school─and be honest with me here─do you miss doing
interviews with Erin Andrews?
(laughing) Erin is amazing, man…
You guys started off real hot, then you cooled off a little bit, and now
you're back on a three game winning streak─define for me exactly what this
team is.
We're really talented, and once we start developing some consistency, it's
going to be really hard to beat us.

Coach Jerry Sloan didn't submit to the chants for Brown, commenting that it
was his job to win the game and use his rotation, not appeal to the masses
(party pooper), but Brown─an extremely upbeat guy by nature─could care
less about that. He's just enjoying playing basketball on a team full of
upstanding guys who also just so happen to be winning a whole bunch of
basketball games this year.
