Has Deron Williams Lapped Chris Paul? By Travis Heath for HOOPSWORLD.com Feb 8, 2007, 13:52 Consensus coming into this season was that Chris Paul was the best young point guard in the Association. Many people sill believe that with the All Star break just a little over a week away. However, for anyone who has truly paid attention to NBA basketball in 2006-07, it's clear that Chris Paul can no longer be unanimously handed the title of best young point guard. In fact, at this juncture Deron Williams doesn't just have a slight lead on Paul but a fairly substantial one. Don't misunderstand: choosing between Williams and Paul is like choosing between those two cars you've always wanted. No matter what happens, you're going to end up with something that drives superbly, will last for a long time and will make the neighbor's jaw drop. That said, Williams is clearly the Bentley of young point guards right now. The individual numbers for the two point guards are almost scary identical. The only number which differs substantially is wins, with Williams having the clear advantage in that category. Yes, the Hornets have been decimated by injuries so far this season which has most definitely had a significant impact on the team's level of success. However, it's not like the Jazz have been healthy all year, either. Moreover, Williams has stepped up and played some of his best basketball recently with Carlos Boozer out of the line-up. This recent stretch included a big win in Phoenix over the Suns. Also, when you're looking at the true measure of a point guard, isn't it ultimately how much better he makes his teammates? If you believe in that line of reasoning, consider that both Boozer and Mehmet Okur are having career years and flourishing on the offensive end. As such, what must that say about Williams' ability as a floor general? Don't take this writer's word for it. Check out what Denver Nuggets' head coach George Karl recently said about Williams. Prior to Monday's game in Denver versus the Suns, Karl was asked about watching Steve Nash on video. It should be noted that Karl has said for some time that Nash is his favorite player to watch on film. On Monday, he further added that Nash may be second all time to former Jazz guard John Stockton in his ability to see the floor. "Nash doesn't do as good as Stockton did, but almost every film you watch you go, 'How did he see that? That's incredible.' Stockton did that every film I watched. He saw things I could never see." Karl later added when asked if Nash is his favorite current NBA point guard to watch on film: "You know who's getting close? Deron Williams." And the film which convinced Karl of this was Utah's aforementioned victory over Phoenix. "That was a good game to watch," Karl asserted. What's interesting about these comments is that Karl is not comparing Williams to Paul or any other young player, but he's instead comparing his game to that of the reigning two time MVP. Not too bad, huh? Again, today's little ditty is not meant to say anything disparaging about Paul, because the dude's a very good player. Instead, it's to challenge this notion that Paul is without question the best point guard to emerge from the 2005 NBA Draft. Don't be so quick to buy what the mass media is selling, and if you're still skeptical, compare the two yourself. Because as Karl noted, Williams is no longer just a great young point guard, but he is now legitimately in the conversation as one of the NBA's best point guards. http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_20751.shtml -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.134.49.169
