That's a lesson the Jazz learned on Monday - or more accurately, were reminded of Monday after two solid seasons of crutches, casts and immobilization boots. Injuries heal, the Jazz understand fully, but effective play comes back more slowly. Take Mehmet Okur, for instance. Against the Lakers, he was walking normally, his back was pain-free, and his desire to resume winning games was intense. And he couldn't have seemed more different from the player he was a week ago if he had shaved his head. When his back spasms struck, Okur sat out of two games and two practices, barely four days of inactivity. Yet when he stepped onto the floor against the Lakers, "all of a sudden, I can't create anything," the All-Star said. "I usually practice every day, but it was long time since I was out there. You see what happens." The squeamish in the crowd may have wished they hadn't. Okur missed 13 of his first 14 shots on Monday, the lone exception being a dunk. He finished 3-for-19, and his uniform felt as heavy and restrictive as a three-piece suit. "I was puffing little bit," Okur said after laughing over a string of missed shots as he warmed up for Tuesday's practice. "You know, I have to keep playing every day. You need it to stay . . . sharp, right?" Apparently so. That's why Jazz coach Jerry Sloan doesn't look at his lineup for tonight's game with the Grizzlies (6 p.m., FSN Utah), with Okur and Andrei Kirilenko and Carlos Boozer restored to their usual spots after all three missed time with injuries, and assume that his team is immediately better off. "You get guys back, and you struggle. People say, 'Why does that happen?' Well, it's pretty simple," Sloan said. "It's always been that way. Guys lose their rhythm after about three days. They have to play back into it, and in the meantime, they can lose their confidence." The Jazz have won eight of their last 10 games, but Sloan clearly expects more problems while his starters get in sync again - and then once more when Deron Williams returns to action, whether tonight or later this week. Williams, who sat out twice in the Jazz's four post-All-Star games, already can feel his game sharpness growing duller. "I haven't done anything in awhile. I was tired as hell in that Denver game" last Friday, he said. "I haven't practiced since I got hurt. I haven't run since the rookie game [Feb. 16], and that really wasn't even really running." So expect a little more ragged play for awhile, Sloan warned. The injuries may fade, but teams have to survive the recovery, too. "I know if I missed four or five days, that takes [me] out of my rhythm. A lot of these guys, they're rhythm players," the coach said. "Some guys can just step right back out there. Oscar Robertson could step out on the floor and get 40 points, that's just how good he was. Kobe Bryant could probably do that. But most guys, they have to play every day to keep themselves going. Memo's that way, he's a guy who hates to miss [a day] because he knows if he misses, he'll get out of it." The Grizzlies are an interesting example. They have beaten the Jazz seven of the last nine meetings, including an overtime win in Salt Lake last month. But their season was doomed when All-Star center Pau Gasol broke his foot while playing for Spain during the World Championships in September. Talk about lingering pain: Without Gasol, Memphis spiraled to the worst record in the West, and the gloom still hasn't lifted. "They fired a coach [Mike Fratello] probably because of that," Sloan noted. Spoken like someone who feels everyone else's pain. For quite awhile, too.
