After 19 seasons at the helm,
it's time for Sloan to earn Coach of the Year

Ask him the question, then stand back and wait for a somewhat icy stare.
It's not that Jerry Sloan is angry or bitter or mean-spirited in any way.
It's just that the veteran Utah Jazz coach isn't interested in talking about
himself or politicking for an individual accolade.
Coach of the year?
"That sort of thing doesn't matter to me," Sloan said.
No, with Sloan, what matters is wins and losses. What matters is good, solid,
consistent play.
But individual awards?
Sorry.
"It's not anything I've been interested in since I've been coaching,"
Sloan said.
"I've always said it shouldn't be a coach of the year thing for
an individual. In my opinion it should be an organizational thing."
Sloan's opinion on the subject is far from ambiguous. But so, too, are the
opinions of his players.
As the Jazz (43-19) head into perhaps their most difficult road trip of the
season -- back-to-back games at Miami and Orlando, then Philadelphia and
Cleveland -- they own the NBA's fourth-best record, trailing only the
Mavericks, Suns and Spurs.
That's a far cry from a year ago, when they were trying just to keep their
heads above water.
Those facts, Jazz star Carlos Boozer said, ought to be enough to earn Sloan
his first-ever coach of the year award.
"I'm going to tell you, from the guys that have worked with him and that
have played for him, he deserves it," Boozer said. "He should have gotten
it, probably, 10 times before."
Ten times? Really?
Boozer eventually backed off that figure, but only slightly.
"He probably should have had it five or six times already," he said.
"And I think every guy in the locker room would tell you the same thing."
It is rather amazing to think Sloan has never won the award, even in the
mid-to-late 1990s, when the Jazz were routinely making deep runs into the
playoffs.
Between 1994 and 1999, Sloan finished in second, third and fourth place,
but never in first.
A handful of NBA insiders -- mostly former players and coaches-turned-TV
analysts -- consider that a shame, but for the most part, Sloan doesn't have
many national advocates because the Utah market is among the smallest in the
league.
Jazz point guard Deron Williams can relate to that. He, too, seems to suffer
from the same syndrome.
Still, he doesn't buy the small-market argument.
"I think if you're a sportswriter, it's your job to know," he said.
Some members of the national media are aware of the Jazz and what they're
doing this season.
Last week, SI.com NBA columnist Marty Burns wrote that in any other season,
Dallas coach Avery Johnson would be a shoe-in for his second consecutive COY
award. However, "perhaps the biggest factor weighing against Johnson ... is
the presence of Sloan. Incredibly, the venerable Jazz coach has never won the
award in his 19 seasons in Salt Lake City. It is going to be difficult for a
lot of media voters to pass him up again, especially given the fantastic job
he has done in leading Utah to the NBA's fourth-best record."
When it comes to that argument, Williams has a slightly different take.
"With (Sloan's) credentials, his record and what he's done over the years,
he's deserving of it," he said.
"But if the Mavs keep winning, it's going to
be hard not to give it to Avery (Johnson)."
Through Sunday's games, the Mavericks owned record of 52-9 and had won 17
in a row.
"He's done a great job," Sloan said of his Dallas counterpart. "He's done a
terrific job with that team."
In typical Sloan fashion, he'll praise the job done by a rival coach, but
he seems to hold himself to a different standard.
"You want to see your team do well," he said. "We've won some games, but
there have been some times when we've stubbed our toe. And we'll find out
how we finish up the season.
"Our responsibility doesn't change regardless of what it is, injuries or
whatever. We still have to coach the guys we have and I've got some great
guys working with me."
