On the eve of turning 20, C.J. Miles gets a lesson from LeBron James about
the need to play defense

   What basketball junkie wouldn't want to spend his last day as a teenager
with LeBron James? C.J. Miles just wishes the occasion wouldn't have been
such a fun party for the superstar.

   Miles turned 20 on Sunday, his unflagging confidence in his own game
still intact despite a difficult time keeping James under control one night
earlier.

   Not that anyone in the league has much luck putting a leash on James. "He
can take over at any time," summed up Deron Williams.

   But for Miles, it was a rough lesson, because he is counting on his
defensive energy to gradually persuade coach Jerry Sloan to trust him with a
little more playing time here and there. So that ugly 4 minute, 34 second
stretch in the second half, when Miles took over from Andrei Kirilenko the
responsibility of covering James, and James took over the game itself, well,
that didn't make it a particularly happy birthday weekend at all.

defensive end," Miles said. "As long as I play defense, and don't make

   Unfortunately, he made mistakes.

   James had scored only 11 points on 4-for-13 shooting up to that point,
and the Jazz owned a 54-51 lead when Miles stepped up to the challenge. The
second-year guard got a putback basket right away - his only hoop of the
night, on five tries - but the Jazz didn't score again.

   Meanwhile, James put on a dunking show, getting loose for a fast-break
romp and a tremendous alley-oop jam before the third quarter ended. He picked
right up to open the fourth quarter, with a pair of driving layups, one of
them a three-point play. Sloan rushed Kirilenko back in, with James having
outscored the Jazz 10-2 by himself while Miles guarded him.

   "This is a tough business," Sloan said. "It's not a high school game,
it's not a college game, it's a professional game, and you've got to be able
to adjust to it under those conditions."
   Miles believes he is adjusting, and erasing his shooting problems from
his mind is a key, he said. His numbers don't look good - he's making 39
percent on the season - but that's merely lack of use, he explained.
   "Eventually, playing with Deron and Booz [Carlos Boozer] and Memo [Okur],
I'm going to get a real good look where I can really sit and find it," he
said. "It's just hard to find your rhythm as a shooter when you play
sparingly."
   His coach isn't worried about the shot, Miles said. He wants more from
the Jazz's youngest player.
   "He's fair. He says if you play hard, he's not worried about the
offensive end. He knows how it is offensively, he knows I can shoot," Miles
said. "But defensively, there's no rhythm to it, you just go and play hard.
Then maybe you get a steal and a layup, or crash the boards and get a tip-in
like I did [Saturday]. Stuff like that will get me going, keep my confidence
up, so the basket gets back to looking [as big as it did] when I was playing
more minutes."
