Webster's Wisdom
Mailman hits the bench
Ben Webster
April 09, 2007
The college coaching life isn't anything like the NBA life, but the Mailman
is taking to the bench in a new phase of his life: Coaching.
Louisiana Tech is hoping former Utah Jazz legend and Tech alum Karl Malone
isn't going to effect a complete 360 to its basketball team. The Bulldogs
went just 10-20 this season.
Karl Malone is reportedly going to become an assistant coach for the Bulldogs.
Former University of Utah assistant Kerry Rupp is going to take over for
Keith Richard, fired after nine years, and Rupp is hiring the Mailman.
Malone, the second all-time scorer in the NBA, is picking up the clipboard.
Malone will be back in basketball after retiring and working on tractors for
most of the last few years.
Of all the former Jazzmen, Malone lands a coaching job; who would have
thought? Maybe he talked to Jazz owner Larry H. Miller and Miller told him
that Sloan might be getting out soon which could open up an opportunity for
Malone to get in.
What about Malone as coach?
It would be easy to see Malone's running mate John Stockton or even Jeff
Hornacek taking a job as a coach, but Malone?
Malone has a wealth of basketball knowledge from his NBA days, but can he get
young players to understand what he is spurting out? Malone isn't always easy
to understand.
If Malone can articulate what to do, things might work out for him. If they
let him wear his cowboy hat during games then he will fit right in. Malone
always made it seem like basketball was something he could live without. Now
it appears that it's still in him.
He has talked about becoming a part owner with Miller, but he could fall in
love with coaching and return to Utah as a coach.
The Jazz did bring Malone in before the NBA draft last year to evaluate some
potential draft picks, but the Jazz didn't take any of the players Malone
evaluated.
Stockton and Hornacek both have helped the Jazz with current players.
Stockton gave Deron Williams and Dee Brown some pointers during the
off-season. More recently, Hornacek was brought in to help Andrei Kirilenko
with Kirilenko's shooting woes. It would be easy to imagine Hornacek roaming
the Utah Jazz sidelines in a few years more so than the reserved Stockton,
but both seem more plausible than the Mailman.
If Malone can coach, Louisiana Tech might not see him around for very long.
But then again, he does love the South where he can hunt and fish all he
wants. As a coach he will be on the hunt for players to help the Bulldogs
gain some bite to go along with their bark.
