A 'Jazz'ercise in Futility

There are about a million things we could talk about in this space when it
comes to the Utah Jazz, because there are approximately a million individual
decisions from coach to player that decide the outcome of an NBA basketball
game.
But seriously, why is Derek Fisher taking the final shots in a ballgame?
There are four better 3-point shooters on the team. There are ten better
overall shooters on the team. Yet, there's Fisher taking two of the final
shots that matter at the end of Saturday night’s debacle against Seattle.
One was an airball, the other hit the top of the backboard.
Obviously you can't blame him. The ball ended up in his hands, so he had to
put up the shots.
On the first inbounds play, Matt Harpring's hands were tied. The play had
no chance of freeing anyone up but Fisher. Boozer collects his airball,
the Sonics hit two foul shots, and the exercise is repeated with .9 seconds
remaining.
On the final inbounds play, Harpring could have gone to either Deron Williams
or Mehmet Okur. But he went back to Fisher. That's not a proper play of the
percentages.
The other issue: Why is there a non-3-point shooter on the floor in that
situation? Gordan Giricek should be in the game, Boozer should be out.
Looking past that particular gaffe, it still boggles the mind that Jerry
Sloan has more trust in Fisher at the shooting guard spot than any of the
other more logical choices like Giricek or Brewer. Brewer has only attempted
nine 3-pointers in his Jazz career, missing them all. He shot 33% from long
range his last year at Arkansas. That was back when he didn't fear getting
benched for taking shots.
Sloan likes to remind the media that he has a much better pulse on his team
since he's at practice with them every day. This is true. Although, the only
reason he can hold that over everyone's head is because he also locks the
media out of every practice that he conducts.
Sloan's basic coaching fundamentals are some of the best in the game.
His loyalties and substitution patterns are not.
