Utah's playoffs never lack for drama
By Brad Rock
Deseret Morning News
Thursday, April 26, 2007
Bearing in mind that a loss tonight would all but doom the Jazz to a
first-round playoff exit, I still can't say I would feel short-changed.
While most people base playoff satisfaction on wins, I base mine on what I
call magni-stories ─ those that get magnified thanks to the stakes involved
and the amount of media present.
As usual, this year has already produced some of those.
Playoffs without overblown stories are like a Springer show without a fight.
Thank heaven for Andrei Kirilenko, Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur ─ and a
media contingent that never stops looking for something unusual.
Although these stories can turn into mini-morality plays, without them the
playoffs could be pretty dull.
So as Game 3 commences, this year's angles are both compelling and
entertaining. Will Kirilenko finally contribute in a major way? Will he and
Jerry Sloan be able to fix their differences on the fly? Will Okur snap out
of his slump? Earlier in the series, Boozer was criticized by TV commentators
for his spotty Game 1 performance, and he responded with 41 points in Game 2.
The biggest story for the Jazz so far has been Kirilenko, whose game is a lot
like his haircuts ─ all over the place. Usually that's in a good way. But
frustration with playing time moved him to tears on Sunday, which translated
into a national story. Kirilenko says he has no answers as to why he isn't
playing more. Jerry Sloan is saying he isn't a psychologist.
I love this game.
It is drama that makes the playoffs memorable, and the Jazz have provided
plenty of that. Take, for instance, 1984. That was the year a Denver Post
columnist accused the Jazz of having no heart. Which, of course, inflamed the
hearts of every Jazz-loving, journalist-hating fan in the city. Next thing
you know, the Jazz had won the series.
And who doesn't love a good scuffle? That happened at the end of Game 2 of
the 1987 playoffs, when Karl Malone and Golden State's Greg Ballard took
turns hucking the ball at one another. Soon coaches, players and fans were on
the court milling around, swinging fists. Jazz owner Larry H. Miller ended up
taking a punch.
Greg
Larry H. Miller
Don't you wish that would happen on the floor of the Senate?
In 1993, John Stockton was late for a playoff practice, thanks to a fender
bender on the way. The news spread like measles. STOCKTON IN ACCIDENT!
Even though he was no worse for the wear, that didn't stop it from being a
big story.
Imagine what it would have become had he broken his leg.
Likewise, who could forget the nonsense with Dennis Rodman and Madonna in
1994? Oh, look! There they are at the Anatomy Academy, working out! Now
they're at Bacci Trattoria for a late snack! They are eating chicken, salad,
fruit and cheese, just like real people!
Rodman, of course, would have his own wing in the Utah Journalism Hall of
Fame if there actually were one. After insulting Mormons, Stockton, Malone,
Sloan and pretty much anyone else west of the Mississippi, he then helped the
Bulls beat the Jazz in the NBA Finals.
And what about Chicago's Brian Williams saying the place smelled like brine
shrimp, and that the only thing good about Salt Lake was the waitresses at
La Caille?
La Caille
When Stockton got jabbed in the eye in 1992 by Clyde Drexler, the Jazz held
a press conference to explain the ramifications, complete with charts. I've
seen doctoral dissertations that were less thorough.
The granddaddy of all Jazz playoff controversies was in 1994, when Miller
went into the stands to attack an overbearing Denver fan.
So many stories, so little space.
Sometimes those stories are so juicy they even show up on the television
tabloids.
It should come as no surprise, then, that Kirilenko's frustrations have
become a big issue. Those types of stories always do.
You know the saying: It's not whether you win or lose but how many times you
show up on "Entertainment Tonight" that counts.
