Locker Room Cleanout Day Quotes


After a great 2006-07 season, the Utah Jazz spent Thursday, May 31 cleaning
out their lockers. We stopped by to get their final thoughts before the off
season.


Coach Sloan

On how to go even further:

“The work starts out now.  Each individual player has to make sure that he
does his job to make himself better.  If you just go home and prop your feet
up and say I’m an NBA player, you won’t be any better ten years from now.
 We’ve got a lot of young guys that if they work at their game to make
themselves in better condition, and work at the things they need to work at,
then this team could get better.  If they don’t do that, then we’ll just be
another group of guys running around hoping somebody comes to our team and
saves our life.”

On comments made by Boozer questioning some players' effort:

“I think those things should be kept in the locker room, but they’re young
players, and I’m sure they were frustrated.  We’re all frustrated a little
bit, and sometimes you say those things.  I’m sure those things were a
learning process for some guys.  We’d prefer that those things stay in the
locker room, but sometimes I get carried away and maybe our players get
carried away, and none of us are perfect.”

On whether he’s planning to come back next year:

“Yeah, as far as I know right now.  Everything should be fine as far as
coming back – unless I wake up tomorrow and say otherwise.  I’ve always
felt that way.  That doesn’t change.”


Carlos Boozer

“It is tough to think back on the year already, especially after last night,
but we had a very good year, and I don’t think many people [expected] us to
have 51 wins or to be in the Western Conference Finals, and to have so many
guys grow up in the playoffs.  I’m proud of my team, I’m proud of my guys,
and believe me, we’ll be back again next year.”

“We have a lot of great pieces.  I think we have the ability and the talent
to get there; we just need a little bit more time together.  I think we’re
going to continue to improve over the summer and guys are going to come back
better next year than they were this year.”

“It was a tough run in the first two years here.  Very injury prone and not
as much success as we wanted to have, but I was very proud of myself this
year and I’ll continue to work over the summer, and…it’s one of those
things where I think I’m scratching the surface of what I can become –
 especially with this team we have here.  We have a lot of talented guys
here, and I’m looking forward to growing with them and getting better with
them, and hopefully putting a banner up or two before it’s all said and
done.  I’m looking forward to next season. I’m going to be better next
season individually, and come back with a few new weapons in my arsenal.”


Andrei Kirilenko

On what this team needs:

“I think more experience.  We’re growing up step by step—you know, you can
’t jump in over your head.  This season, we reached our ceiling, but next
season, work hard in the off-season and then get back to next season with
same attitude, but better conditioning and better shape.”

“We definitely must play the game different.  Don’t look at the fans,
especially away games.  Those kind of things can destroy you.  And don’t
stop playing the game that your players play.  We did a great job against
Houston and Golden State, but against San Antonio, they forced us to play San
Antonio’s game.  We need to stay with our game, we need to be smart and be
focused.  I don’t think we really played our best game in the third round.”

“I wouldn’t say it’s lacking of focus, I think it’s more that San Antonio
forced us to play with lack of focus.  They take us out of our game, they
take us out of our rhythm…They outplay us in any aspect of the game.  In
this moment, in this season, they’re better than us.  But again, I think we
have lots of room to be better, and we’ll be better.”


Matt Harpring

On ending the season with such a decisive loss to San Antonio:

“It’s tough. It’s one of those things that’s going to take a couple days
to get over, but when you look back at the season, I think a lot of people
are going to say we had a pretty good year.”

On what he's learned:

“I think we learned how hard it is to get here.  There are a lot of guys in
the NBA who, honestly, don’t even get to the playoffs.  This is the first
time that I’ve been this far, so it was fun, but it was definitely hard to
get here.  You’ve got to have skill, and you’ve got to be together as a
team.”


Deron Williams: 

On if he is proud of what the team accomplished:

“Definitely. We’re definitely happy with how far along we’ve come this
year.  We had a great season, and a great playoff run, and it just got cut a
little bit short.  We’ve got a lot to look forward to next year, and I think
we’ll bounce back nice.”

On what it will take to get to the next level:

“Just getting another year of experience and going through another season,
and the guys getting a little better in the off season, which I’m sure they
will. That’s the main thing—just moving and coming together.”

On whether he’s aware of the name he’s made for himself:

“Not really.  I don’t watch Sports Center that often or anything like that,
but I’m just happy with where our team has gone, and I’m happy that I can
help be a big part of that.  We talked about getting in the playoffs and we
did that.  I think our focus will be winning a championship.”
