Mailman incorporating Sloan ideals By Linda Hamilton Deseret Morning News Former Jazzman Karl Malone apparently liked some of Jazz coach Jerry Sloan's stern preferences. He says he and new Louisiana Tech coach Kerry Rupp, the former Ute and East High coach, plan to remake the Bulldogs' image. Now a big donor and part-time member of the school's promotions and weight-training staff, Malone recently told boosters and was quoted in the NewsStar (Louisiana) saying that, "It's not only putting a product on the court that you will be proud of, but it's also the way you do it. The days at Louisiana Tech University of baggy pants, cell phones in the arena, hats turned to the side — those are over." Sloan makes players wear their hats straight and bans cell phone use on the team bus and other places. "I think discipline has a lot to do with getting back to where we were," Malone said to the meeting of boosters and players recently. When he played there, the Bulldogs made the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1985, just before the Jazz drafted him. "That's is the way we are going to strive to do it. We're going to give a kid something that's grounded." Malone spoke directly to the players present, saying, "This is your university. This is your reputation." SUB APPEARANCE: Jazz guard Derek Fisher will play one-on-one with two grand prize winners of the two-month Subway Fresh Fitt contest today at Zion's Bank Basketball Center at 2:30 p.m. Part of the prizes for the contest, for which youngsters aged 5 to 17 submitted a poster or video showing how they're staying healthy and fit, is to play with Fisher. Runners-up and 20 honorable mention winners will also be honored today. Grand prizes also include a year's worth of Subway dinners in Utah and a $1,000 fitness grant for their schools. GOOD CREW: Writer Marc J. Spears of the Denver Post wrote recently on his blog that "NBA insiders aren't surprised that the Cleveland Cavaliers had an embarrassing scoreboard malfunction since they are rumored to have the worst game night crew in the league ... So which NBA team has the best game-night crew? That honor goes to the Utah Jazz. The Jazz's game-night crew is a well-oiled, veteran machine that even works Rocky Mountain Revue summer league games together." BYE: Friday will be the last day on the job for Jazz director of communications Cindy Edman. After 10 years on the Jazz job, she's getting married and moving to southern Utah.
