Good News and Bad; Jazz Draft Almond

That was close.
I didn't nail the Jazz draft. Earlier this week I predicted the Jazz wanted
Morris Almond, but he would be gone and they would take Marco Belinelli.
Instead Belinelli was gone and the Jazz took Almond.
Jazz Sr. VP of Basketball Operations Kevin O'Connor hopped on the cell phone
as the Belinelli pick neared. So did Director of Player Personnel Walt Perrin.
Then they left the stage and disappeared into a hallway underneath the stands.
We were all waiting for the trade that never happened, but it sure confirmed
their interest in the Italian.
The Conference USA Player of the Year can shoot it. Almond hit 48% from the
floor and 46% from the three-point line. I've been told by someone with
access to an NBA video library that
Almond can post up and score. He will
also catch and shoot effectively. His perimeter shooting should compliment
Boozer in the post, and Okur's ability to pull big men away from the hoop
should open up the post for the rookie.
Of course if he were really good, he wouldn't have been available at 25.
There are flaws. He turns the ball over… a lot. Teams will crowd him and
make him put the ball on the floor. He isn’t going to hit a lot of pull up
jumpers and he doesn't pass off the dribble. He has to get all the way to the
hoop. He has been criticized for a lack of lateral mobility and an inability
to defend.
Kevin O'Connor says, "He's not a polished player and we're going to see how
he handles the NBA." Is O'Connor lowering expectations, trying to get fans to
be realistic, or challenging the kid and seeing if he responds?
Maybe people are wrong. Maybe Almond can improve his game. But after you get
thru the top picks, most teams just hope to get a guy with a skill or two.
Almond can shoot it. If he can post-up effectively that's two skills, the
most you can hope for at #25.
Gordon Giricek, Ronnie Brewer, CJ Miles, the two guard spot is crowded and
three of the young guys close in age and experience and totally redundant.
CJ is about to be a free agent, sure the roster limit is now up to 15, but
it looks like someone has to go.
