Sloan suggested he did little to sell Peterson — supposedly one of the franchise's top targets in the NBA's summer shopping market, and a potential successor to departed Derek Fisher as Utah's starting shooting guard — on the notion of signing with the Jazz. Instead, he simply was brutally candid about what sort of dedication it takes to play in Utah. "I never considered myself a salesman ... I don't think I would be a very good recruiter," Sloan said. "I just try to be honest with everybody that we deal with," he added, "and they have to make their decision — because if they aren't happy here after they make it, and they aren't gonna do the work, maybe they should go somewhere else." The Plain Dealer newspaper of Cleveland reported Tuesday that, according to an unidentified source, "Peterson enjoyed his visit, but the Jazz did not make an offer." No one with the Jazz would confirm or deny that Tuesday. One possibility is that the two sides are far apart regarding salary terms, with Peterson perhaps seeking full midlevel exception money — a five-year deal starting at $5.356 million next season, and worth about $32 million — and the Jazz wanting to pay significantly less than that. Another possibility is that Utah is waiting to see just how much Peterson really will cost them. According to Tuesday's Toronto Star: "It ... looks like he'll get the full midlevel since there's something of a bidding war going on." Sloan spoke only in generalities when asked specifically about Peterson on Tuesday but said nothing to dispel the notion of a gap between the camps. "You know," he said, "we need to improve our team in any way that we can — within reason. There are certain parameters which we work under that we try to go along with ... and I don't have a problem with that. Never have." "We'll do the best we can with who we have," added Sloan, who is not handling negotiation's with Peterson's agent. "Whoever's here in October, we try to coach them ... That's all I know." That said, Sloan — when he asked if he'd like to see the seven-season pro in Utah next season — did not deny the Jazz's pursuit of Peterson. "Well," he said, "we wouldn't be talking to him if we didn't have interest in him." Peterson spoke quite highly of the Jazz after arriving in Salt Lake City on Sunday, but has not been heard from since. Asked Tuesday if Peterson seemed sincere about wanting to come to Utah, Sloan said, "I can't never judge that. We've had guys come in here and you think, 'Yeah, they can't wait to put our uniform on.' And then they go somewhere else." Beside Utah, New Orleans is known to be quite interested. The Hornets actually signed the Michigan State product to a reported three-year, $13.5 million offer sheet in 2004. But Peterson was a restricted free agent at the time, and the Raptors — his only NBA team — opted to match the offer. Earlier this week, it appeared Peterson's serious suitors were down to just two — Utah and New Orleans. After reporting last week that "it appears Peterson will not play with the Cavs next season," though, the Plain Dealer newspaper reported Tuesday that the Cavaliers and Hornets "are two other teams interested in Peterson" besides the Jazz. The Toronto Star refuted that notion Tuesday, reporting that an unidentified "exec from an Eastern Conference team said (Monday) he thinks it's down to Utah and New Orleans in the Mo Pete sweepstakes. Forget Cleveland or Miami or even Detroit." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 134.208.3.161
