Heath: Utah Should Hold onto Dee Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------- By Travis Heath for HOOPSWORLD.com Jul 27, 2007, 17:27 Reports surfaced in Utah on Friday that point guard Dee Brown will not be retained by the club. More information is expected to become available when the signing of Ronnie Price becomes official. If Brown has indeed played his last game as a member of the Jazz, the move seems to be a curious one at best for a number of reasons. While Brown was never spectacular filling in for backup Derek Fisher in short stints last season -- including some prominent run in the playoffs -- it's not like he showed an inability to get it done. Head coach Jerry Sloan even praised Brown for his ability to come in and hold his own under such tough circumstances. Moreover, Brown played solid basketball during the Rocky Mountain Revue earlier this month. He was near the top of the league in assists, and he shot 49% from the field. While Utah's other restricted free agent C.J. Miles chose to sit out the review, Brown decided to suit up for the Jazz to try and earn a contract with the team for next season. One would have thought such a gesture combined with his solid performance was a recipe to stick in 2007-08. Finally, it's impossible to forget the relationship Brown has with starting point guard, and budding superstar, Deron Williams. The two played college ball together and are very close friends. As such, it's very likely Williams will not be happy if Utah decides to part ways with Brown. Owner Larry Miller discussed Brown's future with the team in a recent radio interview. Steve Luhm and Ross Siler of The Salt Lake Tribune discussed what Miller had to say in their blog last month: Miller was encouraged about Brown's development but suggested off-the-court issues were discussed during the Jazz's organizational meeting Wednesday. One was that Brown was late for practice once and late for the team bus once. The other was the value of his friendship with Deron Williams, with whom Brown has played since their years at Illinois. "Now Deron's married and Dee's not," Miller said, "and so if Dee is going out, who's he going to go with, and is that good for Deron?" Wow! If the Jazz let Brown go because Williams is married and Brown is not... well, that's just not very smart. And it's not like other rookies aren't occasionally late for practice or the team bus. In fact, having that happen only twice last season would probably put Brown in the top 25% or so of all NBA players. Look, this isn't meant to infer that Brown is a vital part of the team and must be kept around no matter what the cost. However, tinkering with team chemistry -- which was quite good last season -- when you don't have to isn't smart. It's not like Brown is a bad guy, and I say that based on numerous personal interactions I've had with him and not just hearsay. At the end of the day, how many organizations are making player personnel decisions based on who's married and who's not? The answer is not very many. And if the definition of being a bad guy is going out with people who are married when you're not, and being late a couple of times, then nearly every player in the NBA could be given such a label. If Brown has another transgression we are not aware of at this time that ends up being the reason for his dismissal, than fine. But anything short of that would make showing Brown the door the absolute wrong move. Whatever ends up happening, Brown will land on his feet somewhere. And it says here that's a good thing because my interactions with Brown have taught me he is a first-class dude who has the chance to be a more than serviceable NBA player for many years to come. http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_22892.shtml --
