Ask the expert: Jazz ever close to trading Malone? By Steve Luhm The Salt Lake Tribune Article Last Updated: 08/10/2007 08:46:56 PM MDT Posted: 11:04 AM- "The Garnett trade to Boston got me thinking. As far as the NBA goes, there are always rumors of blockbuster trades that never happen. Karl Malone was often the subject of trade rumors but, as we all know, none of them ever came to fruition. My question: how close did the Jazz ever come to actually trading the Mailman, or Stockton for that matter?" -- Chris Blakesley I do not believe the Jazz ever came close to trading Malone or Stockton -- certainly not while they were in their prime. In the 16 years I covered the Jazz on a day-to-day basis, I remember Malone getting upset when Jazz owner Larry Miller would occasionally say complimentary things about another power forward -- Larry Johnson, Joe Smith and Antonio McDyess come to mind. Usually, those comments came after the opposing power forward had a good game (or good playoff series) against Utah, and Karl's reaction was fairly predictable. "If they like him so much," Malone would grumble, "they ought to trade me for him." As I said, however, I don't think the Jazz ever seriously considered it. Malone and Stockton were such unique talents who fit the Jazz's system so perfectly that there was no way Utah could have gotten equal value or improved itself by trading either one of them. I've heard one story on the subject that might be interesting. Once the Jazz were no longer a legitimate championship contender -- sometime after their 53-win season in 2000-01 -- there was a thought within the organization that it was time to consider trading Malone and/or Stockton and start rebuilding. The idea was certainly logical: get something for the future Hall of Famers while they still had value. But it was never pursued because Miller firmly vetoed it. http://www.sltrib.com/jazz/ci_6592652 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.134.49.169
