Utah Jazz: Defense disappoints Sloan

DENVER -
Mehmet Okur was called for three fouls in the first 2:52 of
Wednesday's game. The Nuggets marched to the foul line 14 times in the first
quarter and 57 times for the night. Six Denver players scored in double
figures in the overtime victory.
Needless to say, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan wasn't too pleased with his
team's defense, which he has emphasized from the very first day of training
camp this season.
"The bottom line is we're not very good defensively," Sloan said. "That's
the thing that's frightening to us, the way they started out and beat us off
the dribble right off the beginning of the ballgame. If we can't stay in
front of people any better than that, we're going to have a long season."
Going nuts
Morris Almond got one of his first opportunities since coming to the Jazz
to play with the team's starters. Almond took C.J. Miles' place with the
starting five to open the second half as Miles remained in the locker room to
have a gash above his eye stitched closed.
"I found myself open a lot, just wide open for jumpers," Almond said.
Almond hit a 20-footer but went 1-for-5 in the quarter.
He had a couple
of tough moments as Dahntay Jones faked him in the air to earn a trip to the
foul line and Carmelo Anthony grabbed an offensive rebound over him and
scored.
"Those are ones you try not to let happen," said Almond, who fouled out with
12 points in 28 minutes. "They're good players, so it happens, but you try to
keep those to a minimum."
Almond did get the call from Sloan to shoot the free throw after Ruben
Patterson's technical in the last minute of regulation.
Class reunion
After playing together on Syracuse's NCAA championship team in 2003,
Gerry McNamara and Carmelo Anthony were reunited Wednesday. It was the first
time they'd seen each other since the 2007 All-Star weekend in Las Vegas.
McNamara came to training camp with the Jazz and is hoping to land an NBA job
somewhere.
Briefly
Jarron Collins underwent an MRI exam and was found to be suffering from
severe triceps tendinitis. . . .
Paul Millsap played with glasses after
suffering a corneal abrasion in practice Tuesday. "
It felt real old school,"
Millsap said.
