Brewer's chore? Just stop Bryant

It was much the way Ronnie Brewer envisioned when he was younger. A great
performance against the league's best player. A crowd of media hanging on his
every word. His fan base growing by the day.

小小酒曾經夢想的光景正逐步成為現實：
球場上對抗聯盟最佳球員的耀眼表現、
言行舉止受到媒體關注，還有日益壯大的粉絲。

What he wasn't expecting was this to happen due to his defense.

只是他沒想到，今天這些成就是來自他出色的防守。

With the Jazz facing L.A. in Game 3 of the playoffs tonight at ESA, the onus
is again on Brewer to keep Kobe Bryant under wraps. That's what happened
Thursday, when a combination of Brewer's defense and Bryant's cockeyed aim
produced a 5-for-24 shooting night for the reigning MVP. That was bad news
for the networks, which make a living off marquee players, but good for the
Jazz, who pulled to a 2-1 deficit in the series.

這個季後賽系列，小酒被委以看管Kobe的重責大任，
而在上場比賽中，他辦到了 ─ 縱使一部分是因為Kobe自己糟透了的手感。

"That's the challenge," said Brewer. "My teammates are looking at me like,
'Hey, you might be the only person on this team that can keep up with him.'
For us to have the opportunity to have a chance to win, I've got to do my
job."

「好像在說：你啦，就你啦，去去去，去守Kobe～」
「我這麼菜是能說不嘛，啊不是啦，這句不是我說的啦，」

His job being to tail Bryant from the minute he gets out of bed.

怎麼守Kobe？最好的方式就是像個痴漢似的緊緊黏著他。

"It's fun to take the challenge to try to slow the best player in the world,"
said Brewer, "so I look forward to the challenge every night."

「要怎麼讓地球上最好的球員減速？這是個有趣的挑戰，」小酒微笑道，
「我願意繼續挑戰：五度五關！」不好意思，沒有衛冕者寶座。

Guarding people isn't the most glamorous job on earth. Who really wants to
defend? If defending was a great a job, kids would aspire to be in the
National Guard, not the NBA. But no, they want to score.

防守(guard)從來就不是什麼光鮮亮麗的活兒，
誰會想練防守？假如防守真有這麼屌，
21世紀少年們早就都去守衛(guard)地球啦！
認清事實吧，球場上，唯有會得分的人才會被當做潮男。

Brewer wasn't any different. The son of former NBA player Ron Brewer, he went
to college at Arkansas, where he did what all stars do.

小酒，不意外，大學時代曾經也是個在籃球場上出盡風頭的潮男。

"To tell you the truth, I didn't feel like I was a great defensive player. I
was more of a slash, get-to-the-basket, finish type of guy. But I got up to
here and there were a lot of scorers," he said. "For me, to get playing time,
I had to defend."

「講真格的，我不覺得自己防守有強到哪啦，」小酒自白，
「人家比較想當的是那種猛烈衝擊籃框的得分手捏，」
「可不管到哪總有一狗票射手擋在前面，哭哭，」
「想上場打ball，就只能自己認命拼防守呀...」

It's true that in the NBA there are shooters everywhere. What's in short
supply is guys who want to body up. The Jazz have Deron Williams, Carlos
Boozer, Kyle Korver and Mehmet Okur who can score. Yet when Brewer was
drafted in 2006, he didn't know he would largely become a defensive asset.
Despite a lopsided shooting delivery and modest range, he saw himself as an
offensive player.

這也是實情，看看光隊上就有多少人的出手優先權在他前面：
胖老史、瘦老馬、煙斗仔，還有土耳其大個兒。
小酒進聯盟時，壓根沒想過會被定位為防守型球員，
雖然出手姿勢歪斜詭異，兼且欠缺長程火力，
小酒還是一直催眠自己是為得分而生。

Still, he figured out a way to play, taking on the job of guarding some of
the NBA's best scorers. Heaven knows, the Jazz needed him. Thus far in the
playoffs, it has worked out nicely for Brewer. Bryant got 24 and 26 points in
the first two games but didn't get rolling until well into each. On Thursday,
as the crowd booed his every touch, Bryant ricocheted shots off the
JumboTron, the delivery trucks and the advertising panels.

不管如何，他終究是找到了自己的生存之道：
在與聯盟一堆變態搖擺人的戰爭之中討生活。
天佑嫩爵，他的持續成長終於在第三戰為球隊帶來勝利。

"He was missing shots," allowed Brewer. "You can't say you're going to shut
him down."

「你只能想辦法讓Kobe不要那麼準，」小酒還是得承認，
「但要他完全熄火根本不可能。」

At the same time, Brewer did his part.

已經做得夠好了。

"He just missed shots, but the majority of the time I had a hand in his
face," said Brewer.

「在他面前舉這麼久真的很累人耶～我說手啦。」

Going from scorer to stopper isn't a natural inclination for anyone, Brewer
admitted, calling it a "painful" process.

要從得分手的美夢中醒來，發現自己比較適合當個討人厭的好防守者，
小酒說這件事對他而言的確是個"痛苦"的歷程。

"I mean, if you want to be in the league a long time ... you've got to find a
way to stay on the court and be effective," he said. "I was able to defend a
little and have a little bit of success."

「我是指，你如果想要待在這多撈點養家費，」
「就要想辦法讓教練用你並且做出貢獻，」小酒解釋道，
「對我來說就是在防守上多下點苦功，你也看到成效了。」

That success means Bryant will come at him with a vengeance today. The trick
isn't to stop him, it's to annoy him just enough. Get him thinking about what
you're doing, rather than what he's doing.

這樣的成功也意謂著Kobe在即將到來的比賽中可能會大開殺戒，
這已經不只是擋不擋得住他的問題，更重要的是怎麼讓他失去理智：
別讓他有時間思考自己要怎麼幹，而是逼他去苦惱你會出什麼把戲。

"That's kind of my niche," said Brewer. "Shooting is a plus, but for me to be
on the court, I've got to get stops and be a defensive player."

「這就是我要扮演的角色，」小酒說，
「擋住他，看緊他，嗯...除此之外能再投個幾顆，我就發達啦～」

Scoring is glamorous, but prevention is an art unto itself.

十八銅人亮晶晶不是因為會投球，而是因為他們會擋(打)人。
