NBA Offseason Buzz: Utah Jazz

They backed into the eighth playoff spot, losing seven of their last nine 
regular-season games, and then went rather quietly against the Lakers. Once a 
gritty defensive team, they gave up 100 points a game and allowed opponents 
to shoot 46 percent. With five potential free agents, some wondered if 
personal agendas unhinged the franchise's trademark cohesion. The better bet? 
A team not suited to playing up-tempo simply wore down trying to score 
100-plus every night to cover for its mediocre defense. With all those free 
agents coming back -- at least as of now -- is there any reason to believe 
this season will be any different for the Jazz?

Trending Up: Kosta Koufos

Koufos may be trending up, but don't get carried away with expectations. He's 
not likely to play more than 15 minutes a night unless there's an injury, but 
monitor what he does with the playing time. Big men who can score at a young 
age have an impressive track record of development in subsequent seasons, and 
Koufos played well as a rookie despite being one of the youngest players in 
his draft class. It may take a couple of years, but he could be quite 
respectable before all is said and done.

And there's a chance that he could make more of an impact this season than is 
currently expected. The departure of Jarron Collins and likely retirement of 
Matt Harpring leaves Koufos as the fourth big man in Utah's frontcourt 
rotation. But he may move up another notch on the totem pole if the Jazz 
trade Carlos Boozer.

Okur signed a three-year, $21 million extension that will keep him in a Jazz 
uniform until he's 34. Since he's big and can shoot, he's a good bet to 
retain most of his value into his 30s, so Utah took on a mild increase in 
risk to lock in that price. He would have been an unrestricted free agent a 
year from now, and it would have cost Utah more to keep him if he had a 
decent season.

see his 2-point percentage dip a bit too. His overall numbers weren't far out 
of line with anything else he's done in his career, though, so look for 16 
points and seven boards a night from him, with an uptick if the Jazz trade 
Boozer. -- Hollinger

The Jazz stuck their financial necks out by matching Portland's four-year, 
$32 million offer sheet for Millsap. Combined with Boozer's not opting out of 
the final $12 million of his contract, that means the Jazz have $20 million 
invested in two undersized power forwards. Boozer is expected to be dealt, 
which will leave a huge void for Millsap to fill, assuming the Jazz don't 
acquire another big in return. Millsap was fabulous at first, filling in for 
an injured Boozer with 15 consecutive double-doubles in December, but then he 
began to break down physically. As a second-round pick making less than a 
quarter-million a year covering for an injured eight-figure guy, that wasn't 
seen as a problem. But now he's about to become the highly paid big man 
expected to deliver every night.

爵士脫到剩一條覽，只為了能提出比照拾荒者的4年32M合約。再加上落跑不了的
Boozer，等於花了20M在這兩個undersize大前鋒上。由於Boozer預期將被處理掉，

The bigger issue, of course, is that the Jazz haven't resolved any of their 
built-in flaws and Millsap doesn't have Boozer's array of offensive skills, 
nor is he a shot-blocker. Can he make the difference through sheer hustle and 
willpower? He has no choice.

當然，更大的問題是，爵士仍未解決他們自身缺陷，Millsap的進攻武器也不如Boozer
，他也不是一個好的封阻的球員（按：去年他的封阻效率在隊上排名第四，而且前
