大意就是 作者之前說到爵士今夏失去了很多球員 但這一個真的不是他們的錯

Wes Matthews 一個未被選上的新秀 在打出了一個不錯的新人球季後

拓荒者送上一份五年34M的大禮 如果爵士跟了就會是個很可怕的錯誤

Remember when I said that the Jazz have lost a lot of players this summer?

Well, at least one of those might not be their fault.


Over the weekend, the Portland Trail Blazers inked Wes Matthews to a

 five-year, $34 million offer sheet, first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski.

 It’s an amazing accomplishment for Matthews, an undrafted rookie last

 year who worked his way into the Utah starting lineup with his strong

 defense and ability to contribute in multiple areas. The Jazz now

 have seven days to match the deal.


In my professional opinion, matching would be a terrible mistake.

Matthews is a good player, but this is money typically reserved

 for sure-fire starters with a history of contributions. Matthews

 has only had one solid season (9.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.5 apg, and

 38.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc) and it’s not

entirely clear if he’s already reached his ceiling.


It’s also not the clear if the Blazers have a spot for him

in the lineup. Andre Miller(notes) and Brandon Roy(notes) are

 firmly entrenched in the backcourt. Roy isn’t going anywhere,

 and while Miller could be traded, Matthews is clearly a shooting

guard with his 6-5 height and less-than-stellar ballhandling skills.

 Roy handles the ball more than most twos, but he’s not a point

 guard and shouldn’t be asked to assume all duties related to

 initiating the offense.


Plus, even if Miller were traded, the Blazers already have

Jerryd Bayless(notes) on the roster as a young, promising

 guard, and his potential is streets ahead of Matthews.

Bayless also has already played a major role for Portland

in the playoffs, getting major minutes in Roy’s stead

while Portland’s star was out with a knee injury this

 postseason.


But Bayless is still on his rookie contract. If the Jazz

 don’t match the Matthews offer, Nate McMillan would

essentially be forced to play his new acquisition because

 of his salary. Yet the Blazers are already low on

available minutes and don’t need another able-bodied

guard who needs his own playing time.


In case you forgot, the Blazers are currently working

without a general manager after the firing of Kevin

Pritchard. No matter what criticisms people can make

about Pritchard’s personality, they can’t say he

didn’t have a plan for the franchise. Right now, it

 seems like Paul Allen and his Vulcan cronies could

 use a blueprint of their own.
