College basketball is phenomenal. I think everyone should get their degree,
because after basketball what are you going to do? No matter if you leave
early or not, always get your education. Whether you stop playing basketball
at 25 or stop playing at 35, you can do something for the rest of your life.
Q:
What was your major at Duke, and what are your plans after basketball?
CB:
I was a sociology major at Duke, but I’m doing a lot right now. I have
myself set up to do well when I’m done. I want to do these basketball camps
forever. I also have an AAU team.
I’d like to further my career in
broadcasting, business management and real estate.
Q:
What’s the hardest part about making it to the NBA?
CB:
I think when you realize, from whatever level you come from, whether it’s
college or high school, the level of competition [in the NBA]. I remember my
rookie year in Cleveland, we were at Sacramento facing the Kings, and this
was when they were really good. They had Mike Bibby, Doug Christie, Vlade
Divac, Chris Webber. I was supposed to start against C-Webb, but he sat out
that game, so Keon Clark comes in, and he was a guy who sat behind Webber,
but had a nice left-handed shot. I was, like, ‘Dang, he never stops!’
So I think the perception is all about the stars, but the reality of it is
the eighth, ninth, 12th, 15th guy on a roster was a real stud in high school
just like you. So
I really think it’s three things that make it hard to make
it to the NBA: the level of competition, the length of the season and how
many games you play. In high school you play about 35 games; there are 82
games in [an NBA] season. It’s a big adjustment.
Q:
Why the
Chicago Bulls? What made you choose them over other teams?
CB:
They had everything in place and have championship DNA. They got a lot of
young players like Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and, for me, it was
the perfect fit. I was contemplating other teams and also thought of staying
in Utah, but
I was overwhelmed by Chicago’s professionalism and how bad they
wanted to win again, and not just one championship but multiple
championships. They want to get back to that, and I’m looking forward to
being a part of it.
