Exodus from Spurs brain trust about to continue, this time to Utah
Posted on August 6, 2012 at 7:45 pm by Mike Monroe in Spurs
It's getting lonely in the Spurs basketball offices.
After losing assistant general manager Danny Ferry to the Atlanta Hawks, who
made him their GM; assistant coach Jacque Vaughn to the Orlando Magic, who
named him to replace Stan Van Gundy as head coach: and assistant coach Don
Newman to the Washington Wizards, who made him their top bench assistant; it
appears the Spurs will lose another basketball executive, this time to the
Utah Jazz.
Dennis Lindsey, who joined the Spurs in 2007 as assistant GM and most
recently had vice-president added to his Spurs title, has interviewed for the
Jazz GM job and reportedly is finalizing terms of an agreement that will put
him in charge of Utah's player personnel operations.
Kevin O'Connor, who just completed his 12th season as Jazz GM, will take an
executive position in the organization but remain involved in the team's
basketball decision making, according to both Yahoo!Sports and the Salt Lake
Tribune.
Yahoo!Sports first reported Lindsey's emergence as a “strong leader” in
Utah’s quest to find a new GM.
Two sources familiar with the Utah search confirmed Lindsey's emergence as
O'Connor's likely successor.
Neither Lindsey nor R.C. Buford, Spurs GM and president of sports franchises,
would comment on the reports that Lindsey was in the final stages of
negotiating an agreement to join the Jazz.
Lindsey interviewed earlier this summer for the Orlando Magic's vacant GM
job. In previous summers he had been a candidate for GM positions in Phoenix,
Philadelphia and Toronto.
Lindsey joined the Spurs after 11 years in the Rockets organization. In 2001
he became Houston's vice president of basketball operations/player personnel.
