Research on historical processes and structures of social and mental
militarization (the exaltation of the profession of arms and the
military values in social life and in the minds of people) is a
comparatively recent activity. The pioneer was Alfred Vagts with his
work A History of Militarism in 1937. The book exerted little
influence until the 1950’s (new ed. 1959), however; and valuable as
it was and is, it was more journalistic than scholarly in character.
Studies in depth by professional historians or sociologists were late
in coming: two on Prussia/Germany by Otto Buesch and Karl Demeter,
respectively, appeared in the 1960’s; one by Andre Corvisier on
early modem Europe, particularly France, in 1976; and one on 18th
century Sweden by Gunnar Arteus in 1982. The importance of this
research field has now become widely recognised, however, and is
manifested, e.g. by some new journals and in the recently published
series of books on War and Society, edited by Geoffrey Best and
authored by some of the most prominent British historians.
對於歷史的發展過程﹑社會的結構形態﹑與社會價值觀的軍事化(全體國民對於軍事
與武器的觀點)的研究﹐是最近才開始出現的。此一研究的先行者是艾佛列瓦革次﹐
他在1937年以此為主題﹐發表了‘軍國主義史’這本書。但這本書只有到了1950年﹐
才開始出現影響(而此書在1959年才有再版)﹐但這本書對於今天的史學家而言﹐仍
舊是一部經典之作。基本上這本書比較看起來像是報導﹐而非學術論文。對於專業
歷史學家與社會學家而言﹐對於這個主題去做更進一步的研究﹐主要分成三個宗派﹕
一個是研究普德軍史﹐代表人物有1960年代登場的奧圖布許與卡爾德米特﹔另外一
個是研究近代歐洲軍史﹐尤其是法國軍史﹐其代表人物是1976年登場的安德烈考維
謝﹔最後一個是研究十八世紀瑞典軍史﹐其代表人物是1982年登場的剛拿阿推斯(就
是本文作者)。此一研究主題的重要性﹐已經是軍事史學界的主流了。並且還有自己
的學術期刊﹐系由傑佛瑞貝斯特和許許多多現今最重要的英國史學家所負責編輯的
“戰爭與社會”學術期刊。
