Institutions, Journals, and Associations
During the era of modem (scientific) historical scholarship, the
institutional organisation in the West for research in military/war
history has greatly expanded, but remained unchanged in its basic
structure. Such research has been conducted mainly in three different
types of institutions: (1) general staffs and military educational
and research establishments (producers of the major share of the
output); (2) the history departments at the universities (origin of a
considerable but rather fluctuating output); and (3) military archives
and museums (producing a minor but vital share). In addition, much
research in this field has always been done by freelance writers and
other 'amateurs', largely owing to the comparatively high marketability
of—particularly English-written—books on military/war history. As for
academic chairs in the branch, there has always been a notable scarcity
of them outside the military establishments, and there exists really
only one university chair of great prestige, viz. the Chichele
Professorship of the History of War at Oxford. This situation reflects
mainly, it seems, a kind of historically evolved ‘division of labour’
between the learned and the military world, supported and in effect
preserved by the basic, and often programmatic, ‘civilianism’ of
academia and the—partly as a consequence—relative paucity of
postgraduate students and junior Ph.D:s engaged in the field of
military/war history.
八﹑學術機構﹑期刊﹑與協會
雖然自近代以來﹐西方戰史或軍史的研究機構與學術認證方式因應時代一路走來﹐
但研究方式與基本架構卻始終如一。軍史學界的研究機構主要分成三種形式﹕
一﹑軍方參謀本部或軍事院校或兩者之外掛學術研究中心﹔
二﹑一般大學之史學科系之中的專門學科﹔
三﹑軍史館或一般博物館之中的專門研究小組。
除此之外﹐還有業餘歷史研究人士﹐如自由作家或職業作家。後者通常隸屬於某一
與軍史有關之企業團體﹐這種團體通常是英國的出版集團(譯者注﹕比如說﹐老是讓
譯者不得不痛心疾首去破費的OSPREY出版社)。但在學術界之內﹐教授一職通常保留
給來自於軍方的人士﹐而這類教授通常是榮譽職﹐比如說牛津大學的戰史系教授。
這種情況出自於軍方與民方在軍史研究上‘分工合作’的現實環境﹐因為兩者的學
術思想各有其不同的領域與典範﹐而民間的大專院校通常想要儘可能的維持其學術
上的‘平民作風’﹐但又希望能夠借用戰史的名義﹐讓大學部與研究所能夠吸收到
更多的學生或研究生。

LQY附註﹕簡單來說﹐雖然西方學術界和文化人士一面倒的反戰﹐但是呢﹐開戰史講
座的教授﹐永遠是沉悶單調乏味無聊的歷史系教授群中﹐唯一能夠大肆賺錢的類別。
但要是開設名符其實的戰史或軍史系﹐保證會讓該大學得罪一大票人文學科知識分
子圈內的大師級人物﹐所以這形成了一種尷尬的局面﹕
會賺錢的科目----如軍史﹐大學往往不敢設﹔不賺錢的科目----如中古世紀修女的
生活方式﹐反而多得是教授搶著當它的講師。
這是一種很難以讓外人理解的學術界黑暗面XD
