Dubs was dead on 1969 and he pointed the Roman "testudo (turtle)
formation" was using in a siege of the Sino-Huns War. However, the

Samuel Lieberman criticized it that he cannot believe people who
were practice Roman tactics would do this kind of action. By the

His book and article is fun to read but it is not fine to trust.
: Ann Arbor The Roman Army in the East.
Ann Arbor is a name of city where the University of Michigan is set.
The book is "edited" by David Kennedy and there is an article that
is talking about the Battle of Carhae which has a note that points
out one of possibilities of those lost Roman went to China. However,
it is only a note from an short article in a collective essay book.
It is obviously not a good example of "evidence" that some western
historians believe that hypothesis.
: Lattimore, Owen. Review: A Roman City in Ancient China.
Owen Lattimore is only writting his review about Dubs' book. Although
he was a sinnologist, his expertise was not ancient Chinese history
and he was a expert of Central Asian history during the Soviet period.
Lattimore had close friendship in both Chiang Kai-shek and Chou En-lai
and he was their political adviser in the same time, so he was a
political activist rather than a historian. In conclusion, I think
I would not like to use his idea to discuss about ancient Chinese
history.
: Ferguson, John. China and Rome.
It is only a short essay of 21 pages in the American Journal of
Philology and he only took several notes from the Dubs' book "A Roman
City in Ancient China" but he did not say that he believes Dubs'
argument.
