Adele and PJ Harvey Awarded MBEs in Queen's Birthday Honors

Musicians join the likes of the Beatles as Members of the British Empire

Adele and PJ Harvey became Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British
Empire this week when Queen Elizabeth II awarded them MBEs in her annual
Birthday Honors, the BBC reports. The two singers were both recognized for
their services to music.

The award adds another highlight in an eventful year for Adele, who won a
Best Original Song Oscar for "Skyfall," as well as a Grammy, a Golden Globe
and a Brit, and gave birth to her first child in the fall. PJ Harvey has not
been making as many headlines lately, but her most recent album, 2011's Let
England Shake made her the first artist ever to win Britain's prestigious
Mercury Prize twice.

The list of 1,180 recipients of this year's honors also included Mr. Bean
actor Rowan Atkinson and sculptor Anish Kapoor.

Adele and PJ Harvey follow in the footsteps of the Beatles, who received MBE
medals from Elizabeth II in 1965. Four years later, John Lennon famously
returned his medal to the Queen in protest against Britain's involvement in
Biafra and support of the U.S. in Vietnam, while Paul McCartney went on to be
knighted in 1997.

Adele gets The Queen’s seal of approval in the Birthday Honours List

Skyfall singer Adele adds MBE from Her Majesty to her impressive awards haul.

She’s had many a Hometown Glory, with Brit Awards, Grammys and even an Oscar
under her belt, but now Adele has a new reason to celebrate, and a very
special fan to add to her list of admirers. Yes, everyone’s favourite
megastar next door will be swapping Tottenham for Buckingham Palace – the
Press Association has reported that the Rolling In The Deep singer is to
receive an MBE in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to music.

This once in a lifetime appointment with Her Majesty is the latest in a long
line of career highs for Adele, who has already notched up almost 6 million
album sales in the UK. In 2012, she was picked to sing the eponymous theme
tune for the 23rd James Bond movie Skyfall, securing not just a worldwide hit
but a slew of awards in the process. The track won her a Brit Award, a Golden
Globe and an Oscar. She also managed a record haul at the 2012 Grammys –
 taking home six awards. All this, and she’s still only 25!

Congratulations, Adele! We reckon it’s going to be pretty difficult to find
Someone Like You again!

Chart Facts

Adele’s second album, 21, has sold over 4.5 million copies in the UK alone
and is already the fourth best-selling album of all time, despite only being
released in January 2011. The global hit has spent 23 weeks at Number 1 on
the Official Albums Chart. Her 2008 debut, 19, hasn’t done too badly either,
racking up almost 2.2 million sales.

Adele’s biggest-selling single is the heartbreaking ballad Someone Like You,
which stormed to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart after its first
emotional live performance at the 2011 Brit Awards. It has shifted over 1.4
million copies, spent five weeks at the top spot and notched up over a year
in the Official Chart.
