I was playing an opponent from Belgium named Justine Henin-Hardenne.
I had lost the first set, won the second, and was leading in the third. It was
my turn to serve. Partway through the game, I tossed the ball into the air so
I could serve it. That's when I saw Justine signal that she wasn't ready, so I
intentionally knocked it into the net. I figured the umpire would have me play
a "let" -- a do-over -- because in tennis that's the rule; if your opponent
isn't ready, you replay the point. But it turned out that the umpire didn't see
Justine signal me to stop, so he couldn't back me up. And when I had
him ask her, well... let's just say that she didn't 'fess up. Now, we're all
human and use bad judgment from time to time, and athletes all use a little
gamesmanship -- you know, when you do things to try to psych the other player
out. But I thought this behavior crossed the line.

    I stood up for myself by insisting to the umpire that I deserved to play
a let. I wasn't about to roll over and let her take advantage of me. But there
were two big problems: the ump didn't see Justine motion me to stop, so he
could't side with me, and the match was being played in France. France is
located next to Belgium, so Justine had "home-court advantage," so to speak.
Her fans started to boo me -- that never happens in tennis. In basketball and
football crowds boo all the time and it's just considered part of the game.
But tennis fans pride themselves on having "good manners."

    I knew Justine had signaled, but I had no way to prove it.
There's no instant replay in tennis. I was so mad at her for taking advantage
of me that I wanted to chase her around the tennis court and swat her on the
tush with my racquet! Fortunately, I remembered my parents' advice to always
represent myself in a way I can feel proud of. So instead of continuing to
complain to the umpire or practicing my forehand on her bottom, I decided to
focus on winning the next point.
