For the most part as children we are learning who we are and why in the world we are here in the first place. As teens we begin to figure out our likes and dislikes, what we're good at, and what just won't work for us. As young adults we begin to create goals that we will strive to achieve during our lifetime, and hopefully by twenty-five we are on our way to realizing our dreams. Sometimes there are individuals who begin creating goals before they reach the age of seven. They see or experience something that captivates their interest and becomes a dream they must conquer, in other words, a goal they now must complete. Early on they experience trials and tribulations usually not encountered until or after their late teens. These goals, like all others, could be anything from becoming a doctor to just being a better person from within. But what happens when finally a dream is realized and a goal is set? Furthermore, what happens when that dream involves sports? In the eyes of many in the world, an aspiring athlete is like a hero in the making, a mentor to look up to. These are people who are exceptional at what they do, and in one way or another pass there abilities on the field or off to others. One of these new heroes in the process of being made is one of two tennis stars who just happen to be sisters. Follow a young hero in the making as she discovers one dream only to follow it up with goals of acting, business and the ultimate goal that makes any hero, being able to help others in need. In 1985, a four-year-old Serena Williams would step on a tennis court for the first time in Compton, California. This young girl realized right then that she loved the sport. By nine years of age, Serena and her family would find themselves in West Palm Beach, Florida. By fourteen, Serena would become a professional tennis player in September of 1995. Her dreams had become a reality with her first professional event in Quebec City. Cut short in less than an hour of play, it would be the first and last time for such an occurrence. By 1997 she would be ranked number ninety-nine in the world. To play such a sport takes a competitive soul, and Serena shows this in every move she makes. As an offensive player in tennis, she takes immediate and dominating control over her opponents. Being the only individual at this time, male or female, to have held all four grand slams at the same time, Serena is a ferocious force to have to contend with on and off the court. While playing her opponents, she shows off her creative talents with innovative outfits she wears designed by her for her, controlling what she wears and not just what sponsors provide for her to wear. This creative flair ended up opening a chance for her own personal line at Puma, which would eventually lead to her working with Nike. It was at Nike that she received hands-on experience in professional design that she continued through traditional education at the Arts Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It seems as though the school has done her justice. Sporting her clothing design on the court has made the public more than eager to buy what they see her wearing. Among groups today, there has been an ongoing discussion on what our lives entail, destiny or pure human determination. We will probably still be debating this question until the end of time, but in Serena's case it has to be a little of both. Early on she had a taste of doing what she loved and that doesn't stop with just tennis. Serena has a real knack for business creating a clothing line by the name of Aneres. This line of clothing has been up and running for three years and the last touches are finally being put together to properly present it. Not only is business a love, but a byway to use her designing talents to the best of her abilities. In this way she is able to do what she likes and enjoy it. The thing is, with Serena, it's not just all business and no play. Along with design, Serena feels that there is just so much she wants to experience and enjoy in future endeavours. These are activities outside of tennis and business that she holds dear to her heart, and when time permits she spends as much time as possible doing them. When she is not working on her clothing line, she has a strong fancy for acting. Appearing in shows such as "The Simpsons," "My Wife and Kids" and even "Law and Order". Serena and her sister, Venus, even had a reality show entitled "Venus and Serena For Real" on ABC Family, which first aired on July 20th of 2005. Though lasting less than three months, the show received great reviews and it seemed as if the girls had a new court to conquer. Who knows what we will see later. Serena has a lot of good going on, which makes it even easier for her to enjoy life when she is not on the field or helping Nike with their latest designs. Not even twenty-seven, Serena is secure and happy with what she has on her plate and is ready to add more. The world better watch out, because we may just see Serena as a pulling force in media to come. Yes, right now she may be doing just voice-overs, but what happens when she wants to create her own show? TENNIS This girl's going nowhere for a while. She loves the sport of tennis and as long a she has this love, you can plan on seeing Serena on the courts for another eight years. ANERES Along with tennis, she is working out those small glitches to make Aneres number one for young women looking for that athletic wear for a night on the town. ACTING It's after her last hurrah in tennis that she would seriously consider being an actress full time. Aneres would be first in her heart, but some acting would be icing on the cake. Grand Slam Doubles 1998 WOMEN'S MIXED Serena has won two mixed doubles games, both with Max Mirnyi. Playing Mahesh Bhupathi and Mirjana Lucic, they would win 6-4, 6-4. The beginning of suprises to come. 1998 WOMEN'S MIXED DOUBLES In the same year in the U.S. Open partnering again with Max Mirnyi, she would win over Patrick Galbraith and Lisa Raymond with the scores of 6-2, 6-2. 2003 WOMEN'S DOUBLES Serena actually won six women's doubles grand slams. The last one to date, she won the Autralian Open with Venus Williams, beating their opponents 4-6, 6-4, and 6-3. For Serena, her hobby doesn't just focus on jobs in-front of the camera, but behind the camera as well. Behind the scenes, Serena is really interested in writing; along with the writing she not only likes to design clothes, but also enjoys creating cartoon characters. This love has led her to do voiceovers for many cartoons like the CW's "Loonatics Unleashed," where she did the voice of a character called Queen Athena. Though Serena is living out her dreams, the most important subject to her is being able to help other youth struggling to achieve their dreams. Partnering with Senegal's president Abdoulaye Wade and others at a UN press conference in 2006, Serena called on the next generation of potential leaders to take action against disease and poverty that ravages the people of Africa. In the International Herald Tribune, Williams was stated as saying," I would never forget where I come from. And I would always want to give back and let people know that it's okay to grow up one way and it's okay to be that way." For Serena it's the memory of where she came from which also keeps her moving forward. One way she is doing this is by financing a building in Senegal, which will eventually become an academic school for children. This would be a lot to handle for someone Serena's age, but not for this young lady. Serena has achieved her goals and is creating more as time allows. She has become a young leader for up-and-coming youth the world over. Some will follow in her footsteps and others will go their own ways. No matter which directions they choose, "at least" they know that the world still has real heroes and maybe they can become heroes themselves. Serena has a long way to go in life, but for this hero in the making each step is sure to become a milestone. Grand Slam Singles and Runner-ups 1999 U.S. Open What a game as young Serena would beat Martina Hingis. This was the U.S. Open that would not soon be forgotten. The scores were 6-3, 7-6(4). Can we say awesome? 2001 U.S. Open In 2001 Serena would be runner-up playing none other than her sister, Venus Williams. It’s not like playing yourself, but it’s close to it. The score ended 6-2, and 6-4. 2002 French Open Serena would beat her sister again, 7-5 and 6-3. Imagine a hundred years from now someone looking at these scores and that they were sisters to boot. Impressive. 2002 Wimbledon Oh, on the beautiful grasses of Wimbledon our sisters would meet again. I wonder how it feels going home after a lost match just to see the person who beat you 7-6(4), 6-3? 2002 U.S. Open The score was 6-4 and 6-3. People just had to watch this game just to see the two sisters battle it out on the field. It’s a great way to let pressure go if you have a beef with a sibling. Grand Slam Singles and Runner-ups 2003 Australian Open Venus is put to the curb on this game and a new opponent is on the way. Serena wins this game 7-6,(4), 3-6, and 6-4. The battle didn’t stop there either. 2003 Wimbledon Venus is back but to no avail. The game can only be won by a single person and Serena wins this one with the scores of 4-6, 6-4 and 6-2. This family truly has give or take issues. 2004 Wimbledon This time Serena would have to settle for runnerup to Maria Sharapova. Even on top you can’t win them all. At least it was to another outstanding player at the time. 2005 Australian Open Venus is put to the curb without a bout this time and we quickly say byebye to Lindsay Davenport. Serena wins with the score of, 2-6, 6-3, and 6-0. Great game. 2007 Australian Open Maria Sharapova, like Venus, is a contender to the end. She is no joke, but Serena makes it seem that way in this game where she beats Sharapova 6-1 and 6-2. Interview Words on a Beautiful Life Today you are one of tennis's great players. What do you attribute this to? Well, I would have to say that my parents have all the credit. They really made it work even though they had to sacrifice to do it every day. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here. Being an African American in this sport, how do you think your success has changed the view of life for young African Americans who follow your career? It's been great. When I was growing up, there weren't many African American tennis players that I could look up to out there, except for Zena Garrison. She had such an impact on my life. I hope that I might have that same impact on others some day. Then I would know that everything I've done would have been worthwile. Out of all the success you have had at this game, what has it taught you personally? I think it's just to always be true to who I am, and humble at the same time. That is my life lesson. In this business one day your in and one day you could be out. I just want to enjoy success while I can. How long do you think you can keep playing this game professionally? Well, I'm enjoying it so much. The energy and excitement is always there. I can do it for another eight years. Away from tennis you have a real knack for business. How did this come about? My father is a real entrepreneur. I think I just got it from him, and my mom too. Being in such an environment, I don't think you can help but to grow up with that mentality. How did you come up with the Aneres clothing line? Well, when I was younger I used to sew and make clothes, and I loved doing it. Later I went to the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They have one of the best curriculums around. In what venues can we find your clothing? We're not in stores yet, but soon. In fact I have a couple of meetings coming up next week. Finally I can answer more questions people have about the line. Who wears Aneres? Every woman wears Aneres. My moto is if you look good you feel good. Can we expect to see another television show from you and your sister in the future? (Giggle), I don't know, maybe. I loved doing it, but we were doing so much work during that time. We had a hectic schedule. After tennis have you ever thought about acting full time? Yes, even now I have a lot of gigs offered, but because of the writers strike they have been postponed for a while. In your HP commercial you say that you love animation and have some ideas. Can you tell me one? I have this super hero that I created, probably because I love writing as much as animation. Not too long ago I did a voice-over for one of my favorite cartoons called the "Avatar". I loved every minute of it. Do you know what the school your financing in Senegal will be called? I have no idea at this point. Maybe they will name it after me. How do you deal with pressure of playing tennis? My father told me, the pressure you have is the pressure you put on yourself. -- -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.139.141.71
