PARAGUAY
Villar – 6 – Had little to do all game as the All Whites failed to muster a
single shot on target.
Morel – 6.5 – While capable of much more, as his previous performances in
the World Cup have shown, the full-back showed real energy and looked to get
forward whenever possible.
Caniza – 7 – Skipper today, the veteran was desperate to cap his
performance with a goal. He went close once or twice but often shot from long
range when he had better options available.
J Caceres – 6 – Like his ‘keeper, had very little to do at the back, but
battled well to win a number of aerial balls against the combative Rory
Fallon.
Da Silva – 6 – Another one with little to do at the back.
Vera – 6 – A disappointing performance from the former LDU man, but only
because he had raised the bar with two excellent performance against Italy
and Slovakia.
V Caceres – 5.5 – Battled well in a midfield that his side dominated but
will miss the second round clash after picking up a silly booking in the
first-half.
Riveros – 5.5 – Didn’t do enough to plug the gap between the midfield and
the front three. As his side’s only real attacking threat from midfield, he
will have to contribute more in their next match.
Cardozo – 5 – Once again, the big man failed to perform in a national team
shirt. He was isolated with little support from the midfield, but still could
have done more to impose himself on the game.
Santa Cruz – 5 – Another lacklustre performance from the Manchester City
man who looked off the pace from the start.
Valdez – 6 – Showed endeavour with one or two dangerous runs but his final
ball was lacking.
Substitutes
Edgar Benitez – 6.5 – Brought some energy that had been lacking from his
team all afternoon and created two good chances for Barrios.
Lucas Barrios – 6 – Offered more than Cardozo but should have got his name
on the score sheet.
NEW ZEALAND
Paston – 6.5 – Was rarely tested by an impotent Paraguayan frontline but
was up the challenge on the few occasions he was.
Lochhead – 6 – Showed good energy levels throughout and did well to
neutralise the threat of Vera.
Reid – 6 – Stood up well to Cardozo and Santa Cruz but allowed Valdez to
skip past him on a couple of occasions.
Nelsen – 7 – The consummate leader of men. Paraguay played right into this
hands by starting with two big strikers and the Blackburn man handled
everything that was thrown at him.
Smith – 6 – Stood up well alongside Nelson and kept both Santa Cruz and
Cardozo quiet.
Vicelich – 6 – Paraguay offered little to no threat coming forward and was
mainly a bystander watching the game take place in front of him.
Elliott – 6 – Worked tirelessly but like his partner Vicelich, had little
to deal with.
Bertos – 6 – Like the rest of his side, offered nothing going forward but
held his position well and got stuck in.
Smeltz – 6 – Isolated with little to no service whatsoever, he defended
from the front.
Killen – 6 – Like Smeltz, was never a threat but worked tirelessly for his
side.
Fallon – 6 – Was beaten in the air by the Paraguayan centre back pairing
but made a nuisance of himself throughout.
Substitutes
Brockie N/A
Wood – 6.5 – The only player in his side who seemed to realise that
Paraguay had a goal of their own at the other end of the field. Tried to
inspire his team into attacking in the final stages but was unsuccessful.
