地球有南北兩極，兩極之間，距離遙遠，用英文表達即是poles apart。
除了距離外，poles apart也表示兩者之間背道而馳。
例：台彎得藍綠兩營在國家認同上，完全不一樣
→The Blue and Green camps are poles apart in terms of their national ident-
-ification.
最近美國前駐台代表Douglas Paal的演講和Congressional Research Service(CRS)
所公布的報告，都提到台灣的polarization，這個"兩極化"便是從polar apart演化
而來。Polar是pole的形容詞，指靠近南北極的地帶，如Polar Regions。而從Polar
又演化出Polarize(Verb)
例：在政治上，這個國家呈兩極化的現象
→The country is very polarized politically
例：在台灣兩極化是很嚴重的問題
→Polarization is a serious problem in Taiwan
另外，polarity意思和polarization相同，用於"分岐"
有趣的是，大寫的POLE也指波蘭人，形容詞是polish。美國社會有許多取笑波蘭人的笑話
，不外乎譏笑波蘭人笨，由以下的笑話可見之：
Two Polish hunters were driving through the country to go bear hunting.
They came upon a fork in the road when a sign read"Bear Left", so they went
home.這種代有歧視種足的笑話，要盡量避免囉。
