: President Chen Shui-bian hailed Kaohsiung City's success in winning the right to host The World Games 2009, saying it will contribute to Chinese Taipei's drive to play an even more active role in world sports.
: Chen made the remarks while receiving Ron Froehlich, President of the International World Games Association (IWGA), and Co Koren, the IWGA Secretary General, at his office.
: Froehlich and Koren told Chen that after two years of extensive evaluations, the IWGA has decided to grant the right to Kaohsiung to host The 8th World Games.
: 'This is encouraging news for us, ' Chen said. 'We are excited and grateful for being able to host the large multi-sports event in 2009.'
: On behalf of more than 22 million people living on the island, Chen said, he wants to extend his heartfelt thanks to the IWGA and even to the International Olympic Committee. The World Games are held under the patronage of the IOC.
: Noting that international sporting events provide a good platform for forging friendships and promoting world peace, Chen said bilateral and multilateral athletic exchanges should transcend political barriers.
: The fact that exchanges of athletes between Chinese Taipei and the People's Republic of China are a regular occurence in an otherwise often tense relationship was one of the most important aspects evaluated by the IWGA in Kaohsiung's bid for 2009.
: 'We are very pleased to host the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung and the 2007 Deaflympics in Taipei. We cherish these opportunities and will make every possible effort to ensure that the events proceed smoothly,' Chen assured his guests.
: Kaohsiung's Mayor Frank Hsieh and IWGA President Ron Froehlich signed the contract for the city to host the 2009 multi-sport event on June 14.
: The World Games will take place at existing venues in Kaohsiung City, Kaohsiung County, and adjacent Pingtung County in the southern part of the island from July 16 to 26, 2009.
