My dear friends,I'm finally back.
Actually I've been back home for a week now,but the horrible lag is still
tormenting me day and night...
Anyway,I had a most rewarding and fun trip to the U.S. in the past 6 weeks,
during which I've done some studies and of course indulged myself a little.
Since it's really cheap to watch movies there,I took the time to enjoy quite
a few hot Hollywood pieces, among which are successes like Tarzan,Runaway
Bride,American Pie,The Sixth Sense etc,and failures like The Blair Witch
Project and the totally disappointing final work of Stanley Kubrik-
Eyes Wide Shut.
This supposedly suspenseful erotic thriller, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole
Kidman,is a movie about sex-and all about sex.
But unlike the hilarious tone of American Pie,it takes the serious angle to
probe some of the most primitive and dark side of human desire and to
challenge the peaceful facade of conventional family value in our society.
I won't divulge too many details, since some of you will go to see it anyway,
but it just basically consists of scenes after scenes of sexual seducement,
betrayal, revelation, and confession.I think the director is too eager to put
all his ideas into concrete images and cram them all into the relentless 3
hours,an attitude which costs the whole film's consistency and fluency.
Through the course of this "journey to the deepest corner of human emotions,"
the audience is given lots of seemingly unconnected and separate episodes in
the life of an affluent New York couple without any explanation or any
attempt to make sense of them;the result is everybody in the theater waiting
to be thrilled to see all the beautiful cast "do it" is struck very much in
the fog.(And I can guarantee you that nothing actually happens between Tom
and Nicole.)
What's even worse is that this movie is full of in my view unnecessary cuts.
You can expect to see scenes like Tom walking down the street for 3 minutes
without uttering a word. (of course he's-thinking)All these supposedly
mentally thrilling shots only contributes to make the film terribly s-l-o-w
and made me yawn again and again.
Some may expect to see some dazzling artistic design and photography in EWS,
but the answer is again quite negative.Apart from the absolutely glamorous
Nicole Kidman and a notorious "orgy" episode, this movie is all plain stuff,
not to mention the excruciatingly repetitive monotone of the background music.
All in all,Eyes Wide Shut probably isn't worth the ticket. You'll very likely
come out of the theater bewildered and tired just like me.In a summer full of
nice big screen entertainment, you can make better bet than this one!

Hearbreaker you got the best of me
But I just keep on coming back incessantly
Oh why do you have to run your game on me
I should have know right from the start you're gonna break my heart
