Today,as rarely as the occurrence of a full eclipse,I'm not going to talk
about Mariah;instead,I want to seriously introduce you the brand new album
of Wong Faye,Strangers only.Actually I've not even finished listening through
the whole piece over yet,but the sensational impace of the first ten songs
already charged me with the unstoppable urge to write, write, and write.
To begin with,I have to say this album is anything but another piece of
conventional pop trash. The musical diversity and the innovation in instru-
menatal arrangement put the boundaries of modern Taiwanese pop music further
and further, seemingly testing where its limit lies by all kinds of experi-
mental,cutting-edge music styles. The very first song on the album delivers
this message clearly enough, for in it,one can barely make out the intention-
ally blurred voice of Faye;but rather feel the powerful melody displayed by
the background electric instruments.A distinct and contrary to traditional
way of contrast is shown explicitly here.At first notice, you could be annoyed
by the heavy, scratching sound of the various strange instruments and the lack
of clarity in Faye's vocal performance. However, after a while, when the song
strongly weaves into the second verse and the chorus part, not only will you
grow accustomed to this special arrangement, but also long for more of its
curiously coarse yet shocking tune, for this new taste of music style has
reached the deep side of your heart and itched the part of your conciousness
that's still virgin to so ruthless and emotionally racking stimulation.
Upon close listening, this track gives you all the more surprises and intan-
gible impacts via its direct, explicit, and a little cynical lyrics.Dealing
with the socially hush-hush topic of personal difference, zealous worship of
idols, religions, and social pressure implemented by way of status differen-
tiation, the whole set of lyrics is expressed in a tone that can only be called
ironical or even cruel. But I found it so wickedly beautiful and appealing-
on the one hand,it distances itself greatly from the usual central ideas of
corny Chinese ballads,on the other,it helps pick up the song's beat with its
own mechanical rhythm- that I soon can't help but follow the words and start
hollering at the world.It's really a heartfelt interpretation,I mean,the
stifled screams along with the bold, amplified music. And the rough charm of
the tough lyrics coupled with the intensive melody is beyond any description.

Heartbreaker you got the best of me
But I just keep on coming back incessantly
Oh why did you have to run your game on me
