MOSCOW - Cellist-conductor Mstislav Rostropovich has been hospitalized for an
unspecified reason, the Kremlin disclosed Tuesday, saying he received a visit
by Russian President　Vladimir Putin.

Rostropovich, 79, received the visit Tuesday at a medical clinic in the
capital, Putin's press service said.

A representative of the press service
said she did not know anything about Rostropovich's condition or treatment,
and associates of Rostropovich could be immediately be reached for comment.

U.S. National Symphony Orchestra concerts featuring Rostropovich were
canceled in November because doctors advised him against traveling to the
United States, according to ITAR-Tass. RIA-Novosti reported that Rostropovich
received medical attention during a December visit to the southern Russian
city of Voronezh, but that he continued his program there.
