Conductor Vernon Handley has died September 10 2008
Vernon Handley, one of the best-loved and most respected of British
conductors, has died. Throughout his life he was a devoted champion of
British repertoire, making some of the most intuitive and masterful
recordings of works by Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Holst. It was also through
Handley's tireless and most importantly, convincing advocacy that many will
have first developed a love of composers such as Bliss, Finzi, Howells,
Rubbra and Bridge. In fact, of Handle's 160 recordings, over 90 were of
British music, including 87 works which had not been recorded before. His
discography includes all the symphonies of Bax, Vaughan Williams, Stanford,
Malcolm Arnold and Robert Simpson, and all the major works of Elgar.
This is not to imply any sort of parochialism ?Handley was every bit an
expert in the international masters, whether Sibelius, Prokofiev or Haydn. In
whatever repertoire it may have been, Handley旧 approach was of devoted
service to the score, and his many collaborations in concertos invariably
inspired powerful and thoughtful performances from his soloists.
London-born Handley, known as "Tod", was a self-taught musician who studied
English at Balliol College, Oxford before becoming a prot of Sir Adrian
Boult. His profound musical insight and warm personality, not to mention his
wit, meant that throughout his life Handley formed long-lasting and
affectionate relationships with orchestras throughout the world. Far too
numerous to list here, they included the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Malm?Symphony Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony
Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Guildford
Philharmonic, which he founded.
Handley won Gramophone Record of the Year three times, and in 2003 was
awarded a Special Achievement Award. A full appreciation will be published in
the November edition of Gramophone.
