As a digression-
In my opinion various attempts to reconstruct Bruckner's manuscript
in the wake of Nowak's effort have gone too far. Different versions of each
year for one symphony do not mean much unless they are "historically"
important. For example, 1873's 3rd and 1887's 8th are important because,
the 1873 3rd was accepted by (and dedicated to) Wagner and the 1887 8th was
rejected by Levi, resulting in 3-year effort revising that depleted Bruckner's
energy. In this sense I do not see the point of Mr. Kawasaki's work on
incorporating 1875-1877 materials to rebuild a new version of the 5th.
If Klemperer's comment on Cooke's completion of Mahler's 10 ever makes any
sense, one has to think why more and more scholars are interested in
rebuilding (their own) editions of Bruckner's symphonies.
