This seminar is aimed at helping you to develop a thesis proposal. You are expected to produce at the end of the semester a relatively well-developed thesis proposal of approximately 20 pages long, exclusive of references. You are an innate theorist. Theories are “within” you, not “out there.” It is incumbent upon you to identify your implicit theoretical hunches, articulate them into a researchable question, and then relate this question to a certain theoretical framework. In this seminar, we shall address a host of major issues in the art of research: ‧ What is the logic of social science research? How do you conceptualize a problem? How do you integrate your life with research? ‧ What are some of the good “models” worth imitating in social science research? How did some of the leading scholars nurture their ideas, overcome the difficulties, and bring their projects to fruition? ‧ What are the epistemological and methodological discourses in social science research? ‧ How can you write a good social science report? We shall cover the logic of social research, but I do not intend to run a traditional cook-book method course. Rather, I would like to probe some meta-theoretical and meta-methdological questions, while analyzing a sample of exmemplar research that should form our standard of judgment; ultimately I hope to spark the intellectual passion in you and help you to develop necessary skills for conducting social research. 上課進度 WEEK 1: Introduction WEEK 2: Booth et al., Part III (Read at least twice to master this part.) You are expected to write something every week. I will illustrate many of these issues with my own experiences. I intend to keep the seminar flexible to encourage spontaneity and to accommodate the pace of your progress. I welcome suggestions, but expect commitment. 參考書目 MAIN READINGS *Becker, Howard, Writing for Social Scientists. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1986).
