1888 – Heinrich Hertz produced and detected RF electromagnetic waves
1893 – Nikola Tesla demonstrated the feasibility of wireless communications
1897 – Marconi built first radio station on Isle of Wight
1906 – First radio program broadcast
1908 – First wireless phone patent issued
1920 – First radio news program
1928 – First television broadcast
1945 – “0G” mobile phones introduced – These were not “cellular”
1947 – Cellular basestations invented for military communications
1954 – Pocket transistor radio produced
1963 – TELSTAR (radio communications satellite) launched
1970 – First wireless computer network developed
1973 – Motorola invented first handheld mobile phone
1979 – Introduction of “1G” analog cellular systems
1984 – First US cellular phone approved by FCC
1987 – GPS system launched
1991 – First “2G” system launched (GSM)
1999 – Wireless LAN became commercially available
2001 – First “3G” system launched (WCDMA/FOMA)
Today – Continued Roll Out of 3G, Planning for 4G and Beyond
