她為什麼抖個不停？
看見狗狗不斷發抖，除了關心他是不是害怕或寒冷，還得進一步留意，狗狗很可能
是生病了！抖抖狗症候群與腦部的神經傳導有關，屬於基因上的疾病，換句話說，
這是一種遺傳性疾病，常見於某些品種的狗狗身上……。
Maggie，住在基隆的一隻瑪爾濟斯犬，年紀約一歲多，生性活潑，她的主人擁有多
隻瑪爾濟斯犬。不知為什麼，有一天Maggie突然之間開始發抖。生活上，除了抖之
外，並沒有任何異樣，她能夠好好吃飯，也能好好睡覺，抖動的現象只有在睡覺的
時候才會完全停止。被送到醫院之後，在基本的血液檢驗、X光檢驗及神經學檢驗下
，發現 Maggie的第一頸椎與第二頸椎之間出現間隙過大的現象，這樣的疾病稱之為
「第一第二頸椎不穩固」，碰觸該部位會出現疼痛的現象。根本的治療方式為使用
外科手術將這兩個頸椎固定，但在種種考量下，先給予內科治療並搭配傳統中醫療
法來進行復健。歷經兩個星期的藥物治療後，發現Maggie的疼痛現象消失了，發抖
的現象獲得緩解，卻沒有完全消失。在進一步的血液學檢驗、放射學檢驗及腦部超
音波檢驗中，並沒有進一步發現異常現象。我們開始擔心了，因為瑪爾濟斯犬、西
高地白梗等白色品種的狗狗，會有一種與基因有關的疾病，稱之為「抖抖狗症候群」
（Shaker Dog）。這種疾病的實際病因不明，只知道與腦部的神經傳導有關，目前
並沒有比較好的治療方法。

◎What is shaker dog syndrome?
This disorder develops suddenly in young adult, primarily small white dogs,
causing a diffuse tremor of the entire body. The cause is unknown although
there is speculation that there may be a generalized neurotransmitter
deficiency due to an autoimmune reaction.
◎How is shaker dog syndrome treated?
Most dogs recover completely with early treatment with corticosteroids
and/or benzodiazepines. Your veterinarian will start your dog at a
relatively high dose which is gradually decreased over several weeks.
Clinical signs usually begin to improve within a few days of starting
treatment, but If treatment is stopped too early the signs usually return.
Some dogs may have to remain on a low dosage on alternate days for life,
so as to remain free of signs of the disorder.
