Tittle: The effect of experience on performing the forward tucked salto under different task constraints Abstract: In gymnastics, technique, posture, and aesthetic execution of the repertoire, as well as the stability of landing, are the key factors evaluated by the judges. When performing the forward tucked salto (FTS), to fold the body completely, and to generate sufficient movement height for a longer aerial time (AT) facilitate the gymnasts to execute better landing. The purpose of this study was to investigate how gymnasts of different levels modulate their movement while executing the FTS from different heights. Six elite and 6 club-member gymnasts were asked to perform 2 sets of 10 single FTSs, from the 90 cm platform and with a run-up on ground. Reflected markers were attached to their bodies on the temple, shoulder, elbow, wrist, chest, hip, knee, and ankle position. A 200 fps high speed camera was used to capture the sagittal view of their performance, and the markers were digitized for data analysis. The results showed that in the 90-cm height condition, the elite group had more successful trials (the clean landing); revealed longer AT, and generated higher hip position, ps<.05. Moreover, they revealed the smaller minimum hip angle after taking off in both conditions, p<.05. Examination of the phase plane of hip and shoulder joints, the elite group demonstrating negative shoulder angle when extending their body and then the decreasing hip angle to dampen the impact about 50ms before landing. In conclusion, experienced gymnasts could elevate their hip higher and tuck their body tighter after taking off, which increased the AT of the movement; besides, they extend their bodies with the backward swinging arms and folded bodies earlier before landing so as to execute the FTS successfully. These findings could apply to training program for better performance, and provided the evidence of information affordance that experience of the organism plays an important role in action (Gibson, 1979). Key Words: gymnastics, forward tucked salto, hip angle, phase plane, affordance.
