i've spent some time on cummings again this winter holiday.
it took me aeons to realise this: so I thought I'd share with you.
for those of you who have forgotten -- this is one of e. e. cummings' work.
the poem, r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r, actually depicts a grasshopper hopping
around. the first line of the poem (and arguably, the title), is cummings'
attempt to show how a grasshopper would hop around --
from 9 to a to 8 to 6 to 7 4 to 2 to 3 to 1 to 5 to 0.
the grasshopper actually hops around on the page .. amongst the words .. as
the poem progresses. :)
quite amazing really.
the book also mentioned a created persona, "i" (in lowercase), who frquently
appears in many of his poems. this persona was said to represent
"someone who stands away from the crowd, unappreciated, without power,
yet able to open his heart with song or mock the follies of society and
denounce the pretensions of authority."
