很明顯,這首詩引用希臘神話Theseus故事的典故,Theseus是雅典國王Aegeus之子,
自告奮勇至克里特島的迷宮殺死牛頭怪後乘船返回雅典(詳情在此不再細述),在出
發前他與老父約定,若失敗身死,則讓隨從依舊掛黑帆歸航,但若成功則改掛白帆歸航,
但他成功回航時被勝利沖昏頭而忘了前約,老王Aegeus在港邊的山丘遙望到回航的船
是黑帆,以為Theseus失敗身亡,故絕望地跳海自殺,形成悲劇.
所以這首詩中許多用語都與古希臘時代的帆船術語有關,我想這在翻譯時要注意,
我舉試以下幾例:

古希臘的船艏像多為金屬鑄造的裸體女神,故有"乳頭",應譯出
: 掛起旗子，那裡有著黃金打造的船首像
: Arching our way, it never anchors; it's

船泊錨,意指停止不進
: 我們的路形成拱狀，它從未拋錨
: No sooner present than it turns to past.
: 很快就不再存在而變成過去
: Right to the last
: 直到最後
: We think each one will heave to and unload

: 我想每艘船都將停靠並卸下
: All good into our lives, all we are owed

good應是雙關語,一是貨物的意思,另外當然就是好事
這由上面的動詞heave(拉舉起)與unload(卸貨)所指涉
應該可以設法譯出來
: 我們生命中的善，我們的虧欠
: For waiting so devoutly and so long.
: 我們等待得如此漫長且衷心
: But we are wrong:
: 但我們錯了
: Only one ship is seeking us, a black-
: 只有一艘船尋找我們，一個
: Sailed unfamiliar, towing at her back
: 掛著黑帆的陌生船隻，她的身後拖著
: A huge and birdless silence. In her wake

西方船屬於陰性名詞,代名詞使用she, her,所以此處指her指"船的"
wake當名詞時有另一個意思:the visible track of turbulence left
by something moving through water;例:the wake of a ship
所以應指"其船的航跡既無生水波亦無浪碎"
: 巨大而沒有一隻鳥的寂靜，在她的覺醒中
: No waters breed or break.
: 沒有水產生或毀壞
