"Pine Winds in Ten Thousand Valleys"*--Landscape Etude 1. Exercises after masterpiece landscape paintings Wind ceases to blow The frail cloth still hard to conceal... Thousands of pine needles all of a sudden Stop probing, stop tinkling--motionless, translucent Absolutely soundless When the wind was blowing, I felt no cold Only heard the pines surging As if thousands of needles were pricking My blood had spurted Invisibly... Visible? I hide in the tremendous scroll Lie stiff in pine winds among ten thousand valleys Concealing My only faulty stroke Viable? The slip of pen yet is like a deviant, underlying stream Surpassing time and space, promises The sinuous valleys, the twisting pines Resonant, vital... *Li Tang (ca. 1050-1130), "Pine Winds in Ten Thousand Valleys," National Palace Museum (Taiwan), Hanging scroll, ink on silk, 188.7 x 139.8 cm.
