Blues Seminar
--Calvin Forbes (1945- )
I want to believe in God so I do
I want to ride lightning and stay grounded
years ago a white man yelled NIGGER at me
I shouted back your mama likes it
good friends don’t borrow love
wallflowers are patsies
butterflies can’t rest on their laurels
I want to stand still like a hummingbird
but people I can’t let my shadow
take all the blame for my poor side
the blues are a truth serum
after listening to a lying sermon
America gave the Negro the blues
don’t you let anybody tell you different
