│ Dear Bin, │
│ │
│ In the autumn of 1922, Wen I-to, later a famed Chinese poet, enrolled in │
│ │
│ the Art Institute of Chicago to study Western painting. But he didn't like │
│ │
│ this bustling city at all! When he received his friend Liang Shih- ch'iu's │
│ │
│ postcards from the Colorado College, luring him with the magnificent │
│ │
│ landscape of the Great Canyen, he was enchanted immediately! He trans- │
│ │
│ ferred to there next year. Again, he was influenced by his friend and │
│ │
│ turned to study English literature and became a writer. He was alleged to │
│ │
│ be assassinated by Chiang Kai-shek's secret police for his pro-communist │
│ │
│ writings in 1946. Liang was my father's teacher. I sat on Liang's lap when │
│ │
│ I was a small child. I feel history is alive, and there is a special link │
│ │
│ between Chicago and Colorado, whenever I pass where Wen stood before! │
