│ Dear Shih-ch'iu, │

│ The Water Tower was one of the few buildings survived the 1871 │

│ Great Chicago Fire. I was born too late! I came here too late to │
│ │
│ witness the catastrophe! Yet, we saw the Great War-the agony of fire │
│ │
│ and the destruction of civilization! China, too, is burning, burning │
│ │
│ to the ground, when we sit here and write our poems! │
│ │
│ The shape of the Water Tower is like a candlestick. Alas! The │
│ │
│ only thing I can do is to wrote a poem for you! I hope the disastrous │
│ │
│ history will illuminate the human future-- │
│ │
│ Red candle! │
│ So red is the candle! │
│ O, poet! │
│ Spit out your heart and compare - │
│ Are they of the same color? │
