Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying Barrett’s metaplasia and
development of targeted therapy for esophageal cancer.
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. David Wang.
This laboratory is part of the UT Southwestern Barrett’s Esophagus research
group led by Drs. Rhonda Souza and Stuart Spechler. This collaborative group
is made up of gastroenterologists, pathologists, surgeons, basic scientists,
and a medical oncologist. Dr. Wang is a member of the NCI-designated UT
Southwestern Simmons Cancer Center.
Areas of interest include:
1. Utilizing a developmental biology approach to identify novel signaling
pathways and transcription factors relevant to Barrett’s esophagus.
2. Characterizing the role of Hedgehog and BMP signaling in Barrett’s
metaplasia and esophageal carcinogenesis.
3. Molecularly targeted therapy of esophageal cancer in novel animal models
of esophageal cancer.
These research topics will be addressed with a combination of molecular,
cellular and developmental biology techniques. Our experimental systems
include embryonic and transgenic mice, mouse and rat surgical models, rodent
endoscopy, telomerase-immortalized human esophageal cell lines (squamous and
Barrett’s), esophageal cancer cell lines (squamous and adenocarcinoma),
esophageal tissue microarrays, and in vivo transplant culture.

Candidates should hold an M.D. and/or a Ph.D. degree. Experience in the field
of molecular biology, developmental biology, cancer biology or
gastroenterology is recommended.
Interested individuals should send the following information:
1. A statement of interest explaining why the candidate is interested in the
position and how the position might further the candidate’s career goals.
2. An updated CV.
3. Names and contact information of three references.
