Dear Advisor:
We recently mailed a package to your center with information on the English
Language Institute (ELI) and Office of International Programs (OIP) at Notre
Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, Maryland. Notre Dame of Maryland
University, founded in 1895, is a liberal arts institution rooted in the
Catholic tradition. As a diverse community, we honor community members of all
religious and cultural backgrounds.
The ELI, part of the OIP, is an intensive English program for international
women and men who seek to improve their language skills for further study in
American universities, professional development, career advancement, or
personal enrichment. Since 1983, the ELI has been providing high-quality
language and culture training to students from around the world.
Our academic program is designed for students 18 and older - at all levels of
English proficiency - to study writing, grammar, reading, listening,
speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, TOEFL test preparation and other skill
areas as needed by our students.
Highlights of the ELI program include:
*A dedicated and experienced faculty with Master's degrees in Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), many of whom have taught in
the ELI for over 20 years;
*Students from 20-25 different countries in each session, adding rich
diversity;
*Year-round sessions with start dates in January, March, June, August and
October;
*A certificate granted upon successful completion of the program;
*TOEFL waiver for female students who qualify and successfully complete the
advanced level in the ELI and are applying to the Women's College
*Inclusion in a university community with access to all campus facilities.
The ELI is a part of Notre Dame of Maryland University, a comprehensive
university that serves both women and men in several programs and schools
including:
*Women's College - for women who wish to pursue a bachelor's degree in one of
30 majors including international business, engineering, marketing,
communications, nursing and education.
*College of Adult Undergraduate Studies - for women and men who wish to
pursue a bachelor's degree in a part-time program. This program is not
available for students on the F-1 visa due to its part-time nature; however,
permanent residents and others who may study part time may be eligible for
this program.
*College of Graduate Studies - for women and men who wish to pursue a
master's degree or Ph.D. in areas including leadership in teaching,
management, contemporary communication and nonprofit management, as well as a
doctorate in instructional leadership for changing populations.
*Graduate Schools
*School of Arts and Sciences
*School of Education
*School of Nursing
*School of Pharmacy
The OIP works closely with the ELI and with the undergraduate and graduate
schools and programs highlighted above. We continuously look to build
strategic relationships and collaborative partnerships in furtherance of our
mission to develop students as global citizens to transform the world.
We would very much welcome the opportunity to discuss:
*customized short-term English language and cultural immersion programs with
the ELI;
*exchange programs (year-semester-short term/1-3 week) for students, faculty
and staff;
*opportunities for international students to study at Notre Dame; and
*individualized programs in specific academic areas including STEM, nursing,
pharmacy, education, business, and communications. As an institutional member
of the Baltimore Collegetown consortium, we have access to the resources of
15 nearby universities including Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University
and Towson University. Comparative programs can be designed based on your
student and faculty needs.
Attached are electronic versions of our brochures highlighting information
about our institution, services for international students and our ELI
program.
We look forwarding to working with you collaboratively on any one of the
opportunities mentioned above.
Sincerely,
Theresa Cannone, M.A.
