我本來的翻法也是 "我認為，人們相信他們認為自己相信的事物"，

英文的結構應該是:

I believe that people believe the thing (that they believe) they believe.

(what我改成the thing that方便說明)

前三個believe都有受詞，但最後一個沒有，但我查字典發現這個字一定要有受詞。


所以我後來覺得這句的原型(deep structure)應該是：

"I believe that people believe [that they believe (what they believe)]."

而believe(1)的受詞是that people believe....
  believe(2)的受詞是that they believe.....
  believe(3)的受詞是what they believe
  believe(4)的受詞是what

是因為what往前移動才成為句子的surface structure。


這二種結構差異在於：

"people believe"的受詞，在翻法1裡是the thing，

在翻法2裡是"that they believe what they believe"，

因此，我會翻譯成 "我認為，人們相信一件事，那就是他們相信自己所相信的。"

這地方我翻錯了，按照這種講法：
"I believe that people believe [that they believe (what they believe)]."
that they believe(3)是名詞子句，what當believe(4)的受詞的話，
-->what是疑問代名詞，應該翻譯為"什麼"
所以應該是: 我認為，人們相信一件事，那就是他們相信自己相信什麼。
我應該把what they believe改成當作一個形容詞子句，我的意思應說成：
I believe that people believe that they believe all that they believe.
beleive(4)的受詞是 that，才會翻成：
"我認為，人們相信一件事，那就是他們相信他們所相信的。"
但仍無法解決what為何前移的問題。

我覺得這樣的翻法比第一種翻法更make sense，

第一種翻法我想好久，想不懂它到底要表達什麼XDDD

(不曉得有沒有人可以替我解釋一下它到底是什麼意思?

我有嘗試在第一種句子結構下把4個believe分別翻成認為/相信，但還是覺得怪怪的。)

不過有一點我無法解釋：如果是第二種結構的話，為什麼what要往前移?


另外，believe是相信還是認為，是看語意：
1. 相信：to be sure that something is true
         or that someone is telling the truth:
2. 認為：to think that something is true or possible,
         although you are not completely sure

翻譯還牽扯到中文，中文裡頭：
1. 相信：vt/vi，受詞可以是子句/N
2. 認為：vt，受詞必須是子句
(這我是沒有查啦，但我相信自己身為native speaker的語感XD)

所以在第二種結構
I believe that people believe [that they believe (what they believe)]下，
believe(1)(2)(3)可以翻譯成相信/認為，但這指是文法上可以，實際語意未必合邏輯，
believe(4)是翻成"他們所XX的(事情)"，XX在中文裡頭沒有受詞，無法翻譯成"認為"。
